Sheffield
OK, I know we got some guys from Boston here. I'd like to see your temperature on what happened last night. To me the issue seems to be whether or not Sheffield could have shown more restraint and just not done anything at all. What's not an issue (at least not to me) is that the "fan" was wrong. No fan has a right to interfere with a player on the field in any way, period. I think if I were Sheffield, I would have probably had some kind of initial reaction too - instincts basically kicking in. I think he did about what can humanly be expected of him. Wouldn't even be an issue if the fan would have stayed out of the play. On top of that, from my 100+ viewings of the incident, I have concluded that the fan was not going for the ball at all, and was intentionally taking a swipe, but that is subjective for sure. He is stupid anyway for trying to interfere because if he touches the ball, Varitek's triple becomes a double. So anyway you slice it, the guy is an idiot. Here is the real deal, the fan in the stand did not hit Sheff on purpose, he was giving the windmill to clear the bases because of a great hit that ran along the wall. Sheff ran into his hand while the fan was in a full windmill. What really got Sheff pissed off was ALL the fans yelling. At Fenway, if you are in the first few rows, you are basically on the field. Sheff(never played for a team that didn't wind up hating him) lost it and attacked the closest fan he could get his hands on. I'm sure his admitted steroid abuse still has an affect on his anger managment. Thankfully, a security guard got in the way before Sheff could really do some damage to some innocent people in the stands, especially those two women he was eyeballing. I hope the fan will sue Sheff for at least a couple million for assault. How many arms did you see over the wall as the ball went along the wall? I say 50, no one ever gets thrown out so it must be o.k., right? So why get mad at a guy for doing the windmill and accidently hitting a player. The Red Sox management accepts fans being part of the game, so unless they change the rules they should not take away this guys 7 season tickets, as they are considering. If they do not make fans responsible for reaching in during the play of a game, then they are accessories to this type of incident. I can guarantee that only a "Yankee" player would be the one going after a fan in the stands. The biggest joke out of all of this is hearing the Yankee fans, and media saying how the Sox fans are the worst in the world and Yankee fans are much nicer, and reserved, and would NEVER do anything to get a Red Sox player or fan upset in Yankee stadium. HA HA HA!!! Their arrogance is once again fogging their reality! Bill Dunlop "Rebecca Rose" 33 Bertram FBC 1988

Bill, Have to disagree with that one. I also watched the replay a couple of dozen times. No way was that guy doing the windmill. He was also not going for the ball as he was not bent over far enough. While I don't think he was trying to slap or punch Sheffield, I definitely think he was trying to mess with him (i.e tip his cap off or something, who knows). If he was just waving Tek in, how come you can read his lips telling the security guard he was going for the ball? I hope they revoke his season ticket along with the a**hole next to him wearing the GAP sweatshirt who purposely dumped his beer and then acted like a little girl pretending he got shoved. I hope someone from the section rats him out too. I have been a season ticket holder for about 7 years now and I hate idiot fans like that. There's no place for that in any professional sport. Just because you buy a ticket does not give you the right to interfere. As far as fan intereference in general, this just backs up what I've been saying for years: Boston fans are among the dumbest fans on the face of the earth. I don't care how much you hear the "authorities" at the networks (TV and Radio) or in the papers talk about how smart Boston fans are, they are stupid. They constantly reach for balls in play that could wind up screwing the Red Sox. Everytime I go to a Pats game I'm amazed at how many people don't understand the fact that you cheer when your team is on defense. You know, so the other teams offense can't hear the signals being called. Then your quiet when your own QB is calling out the signals. You know, homefield advantage! Yet here we are 3 time Super Bowl Champs with fans at the playoff game against Indy telling me to watch the game at home if I want it to be quiet! Unreal. Actually a year and half ago I was at the famous snow ball fireworks display game against Miami. We got 3 feet of snow the day before the game. We left at 10AM for a 4PM game, got to the Stadium at 11:30 and had a great time tailgaiting. The Pats won 12-0 and the the fireworks erupted when Tedy Bruschi intercepted a Jay Fielder pass and returned it a few yards for a touchdown. Ir was also the only Pats game I've ever been to (about 15-20 games in total) where the fans got it right and cheered only when the Pats were on defense. The next day I found out that were nearly 20K no shows and that these people were pissed that they coudn't get parking an hour or 2 before kickoff. Seems they didn't realize what a 3 foot snowfall would do to the parking situation. I'm convinced that these were the same idiots who don't know when to cheer and are the very same bozo's that reach down for a ball in play at a Sox game. That guy was lucky Sheffield didn't pound him into a pulp and showed a ton of restraint by not doing so. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth

You couldn't tell he was in a full windmill when Sheff ran into the poor guy? I could read the fans lips, he was doing a vicious windmill when Sheff ran his face into his hand, while at the same time he was saying "RUN, RUN, RUN, Clear the bases, run to third Varitek, Sheff can't throw real far!" I saw the tape a thousand times. Bill Dunlop "Rebecca Rose" 33 Bertram FBC 1988

FYI: They revoked the season tickets of the waver and are attempting to prohibit the beer thrower (gap sweatshirt) from buying tickets to future games. I went both Sat night and yesterday afternoon. Looks Manny had woken up! Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth
