Paint matching

Post by Justinf89 »

Well, I think we have decided to paint our Bertram. I was wondering if any of you all have had any knowledge of what color the boat actually is? Mine is a 1977 fbc and the top half, above the rub rail is original gel coat, and kind of a cream color. The bottom has been painted and is the only section we're spraying. It's color is white and looks nothing like the top half. I would like to match a color to the top half and everybody tells me to use awlgrip. Any fans?

Justin:: Awlgrip's Oyster White is the match for Bertram's gelcoat for the late 70's models. Mike

Wow Mike, I've been looking for that answer for a long time. Thank you very much. It was hard to tell on my boat even after I compounded a section of the top. The sample I had of the oyster white was just too small but it was the closest. Thank you very much.

Justin: I have a '78 FBC and Awlgrip Oyster White is a perfect match to the gelcoat. Interlux "Perfection" also comes in Oyster White but I haven't checked that for color match. I have read that the "Perfection" is easier to work with but haven't tried it for anything. Mike

Mike, Did you actually use the awlgrip on your boat and if so, did you paint it yourself? I've heard it's a professionals paint.

Justin: I did use it but I didn't paint the whole boat. Just some miscellaneous things, e.g. the ventillators, a scrape on the swim platform. I did a lot of practice with it before doing even these small jobs. I wouldn't even try to do the hull or superstructure. Mike
