Fuel Burn

Post by smanni »

Last weekend I burnt a lot of fuel compared to the prior 3 weeks and the prior 3 years. No major changes in weight or anything else and the week before I fished the same exact spot so the run was the same, but I burnt 30 more gallons, in only 4 hours. I have been all over boatdiesel but havent seen anything that would cause this. Any ideas - anyone else with the cat 3208 275hp ever have this happen. According to my records, this happened to me one time last year also - then just went away. Also- just in case it comes up - I fill up after every trip and I am absolutely sure the tank was equally full before each trip - so, unless someone stole fuel out of my tank (highly unlikely at my marina) I'm stumped.

Was it rougher than usual, pounding thru or climbing back of steep waves? Capt Rich Catch 22 1989 33 FBC

That could be an indication of the motors being alittle overloaded. They are dumping more fuel than they can burn. Climbing those walls of water, the cats keep dumping fuel to maintain speed, hence your useing more fuel but not getting there any faster. I've had the same issue with mine. Mike

Manni, You need to get that looked at. 200 off of wot under load is not good. Do you notice any smoke trail. What have you done to the boat that has changed from last year. You should be getting 3050 rpm wot at the dock. What are you getting there? Mike

At the dock - 3050 easy. no smoke. Nothing different this year on the boat. I changed the air filters this weekend, but didnt run the boat - we ran a friends boat instead. I'm hoping the filters wil help, they were pretty bad. I will post next week.

The filter might give you some but , depending on how bad they are, maybe not all of it. The bad filters could be why you were getting more soot than normal, but to be off by 200 rpm, I personally would get it looked at. Something ain't right. Mike

Manni' I was'nt in that tournament. I am, how ever, in the jcsa and mako mania this coming weekend. The weekend is looking good and from what I can see on the temp charts, I won't have to go far. Most of the good water is with-in 45 miles. I'll keep you posted as how I did next week. Mikequote:Originally posted by smanni Mike - how did you do in the tournament last weekend?

GOOD LUCK - we are in the Cape May Shark Tournament this week and we're looking at about a 40-50 mile run.
