Brown goo not good. Might want to pull carbs and check for more goo. Sounds like old gas, and new gas, might have entered your tank somehow. How old is your Bert? Bill 1988 33 FBC Ipswich, Ma. [img]

Mike, I have a '73 with merc 8.1s (370hp) - ZF 2:1 - wheels are 3 blade 20x19.5 - added 1.5" pitch on repower. I get .7 nm/gal thru the band ~19kt-22kt, I figure 30-32gal/hr total (at 22kt) which was the same burn as the 454s, just 1.5 kt faster. Could wheel a bit more, still 4-500 over max. Topped out at (light) 31kts. Just replaced the 258 gal FRP tank with a aluminum 3/16" powder coat 285 gal and the deck with Nidacore panels. May actually finish by Thanksgiving. Best regards, Alan.

Bill, the brown stuff was sediment type and not goo. BTW, I have pulled plugs and looked trough the carb and all seems well. Regarding my tank, I plan to replace this year if all other parts of the motors check ok. If they don't then they'll be coming out and I'll go into long term storage for a year or two while I repower. Another plus of the new motors is no carbs/timing to mess with, just start and go. I would wonder as well if the no advertised "Cruise Control/Sync" could be fitted to motors just a few years old? I like the sounds of that technology. br, John D "Lady D" Bertram 35 Pasadena MD

Hello Gentleman, I recently met one your members who referred me to your forum. You all seem to be in tune with gas repowering for boats this size. I have a 1983 32' Hateras. Please do not shoot! I am currently running 1993 7.4's and am interested in the performance of the new 8.1 Crusaders. What kind of speed and economy are you experiencing? Thanks in advance for your tolerance, Mike

Hatt, Welcome aboard. While you're not running a Bert, you've still got a great boat. Seeing as your boat is a little narrower and lighter than both the 33 and 35 Berts, I think you would get comparable to better performance. Right now, most of the 33 and 35 guys running 8.1's (both Merc and Crusader) are cruising around 22-24 knots depending on load and conditions. Normal 454 performance is between 18-20 knots, again depending on load and conditions. What are you getting from your 454's? Just curious to see whom you met from this site. Hi Hatt, thanks for stopping by! Gas consumption for me at cruising speed (21 knots) is about 3/4 of a mile per gallon.

I could be wrong, but I think he's looking specifically for fuel burn on 8.1's. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA [img]

I have the 8.1's and get .7nmph at 22-23knots.I would say your consumption will be the same but at 3-4 knott cruise increase.

Thanks again guys. I am pushing 18000 lbs dry, cruising 16 knts at 3200 rpms. I am also running 4-blade props 19"x19". This calculates to 22 gph. The typical 4-5 knot increase in speed would be incredible. I would probably have to install seat belts on the old girl. Mike

Nice, You caught it! I was going to use "Obe One Cannoli", but that was too obvious.
