Gunny, the 28th works for me too. The generator is out and ready. Jay, thanks for the help, I can always look something up on the internet if you can't think of something off the top of your head. Any interest in joining the group at Eddies on January 28th since you live in the area? George, does the 28th work for you? Doug, Frank, Gunny, George, Jay, Would a mid-day (12 - 1 p.m.) rendezvous time work for all? I'm coming from NJ and Gunny is coming from Maine so that would allow for some commuting time. We could pick up some Pizza's and dine on the back of the boats indoors? Brian '90 Bertram 33' FBC Never Say Never Westbrook, CT (Homeport) Kinnelon, NJ (Home)

Its hard to say - I am smoked at work so it will be a last minutre decision but feel to crawl all over my boat if I am not there. I am hopeful there will be somthing to see in terms of progress.

It doesn't make a difference to me. I'm only about 65-70 miles away (should take me about an hour and 15 minutes to and hour and half). Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

I'd be very interested and would love to join you. Unfotunatly, that date is the Saltwater Sportsmans fishing seminar at the Convention center and I've already committed to tickets and freinds to attend. If we get a break, I might pop in to say hello. Now that I think of it , it's been a while since I've been to Eddies shop and I used to be in there every other week when I was doing my repower. I will be watching this post with much interest so please keep updating it.

Brian Congratulations and good luck with your repower. I am sure you will be thrilled. I have friend who went the same route and has been totally pleased. See his published article @ http://www.eggharborowners.org/eggpower.htm He is a detail oriented, perfectionist and walking boat encyclopedia. His last trip was NY to Bahamas with ~1000hrs on the trouble free Yanmars. If you have any questions I sure he could help. Let me know and I'll put you in contact. Capt Rich Catch 22 1989 33 FBC

I almost hesitate to post this since there are 2 repowers going on right now but I was at the providence boat show and visited a new player- Iveco. I spoke to one of the reps and I've got to say, I think these guys are going to provide some serious competition in the marine diesel market. They are very likely cutting prices to buy into the scene but they are very, very aggressive. They had their new 5.9 series COMMON RAIL 400 Hp engine at the show. This is the same base engine as the Cummins 5.9. In fact, Iveco (consilidated diesel) supplies Cummins with the 5.9 base engines. Iveco (according to the rep., is the worlds largest common rail manufacturer and actually liscenses their technology to Bosch). The price was the shocker - 21k bob tail with electronic panel included. Thats 400 hp (actually 396) "Common rail"! Their 280HP 6 cylinder non-common rail was under 17k bobtail with panel!

No matter, I would never part with this kind of money on something that hasn't been tested (and tested and tested and tested....). While money is obviously a factor, once I get in this deep I am not cutting corners. I have no doubt they are nice engines but my research suggests the Yanny's have one hell of a good reputation. I would worry forever if I went with something "new" to the market and service and parts have to be a concern. What if they tank in 2 years - it would destroy the value of my boat. Plus, I am convinced that a large part of the success of this project rests in having the right shop do this work. All my digging lead me to Johnson's. I am on my way to the boat now and will take some photos. Do you guys have thoughts on the Genny? Brand, size etc - I never used mine so I am not sure what I want or need.

Actually, Iveco is not new to the industry, they have been making engines since 1975. With over 15 million engines produced, of which 4 million are still in service, and with an engine annual production of over 400,000 units, Iveco is one of the largest manufacturers of diesel engines in the world. I see these engines in a lot of large shrimp trawlers, and tugs. They are a very dependable commercial marine engine. http://www.ivecomotors.com/cgi-bin/ivec ... yOID=-8151 http://www.maesco.com/products/mar_prop/mar_prop.html http://www.maesco.com/products/iveco/iveco.html 1979 Bertram 33' FBC ALEXANDRA Port Richey, Florida

George, You can't go wrong with the Yanmar name and I think both you and Brian made a good choices. You're also correct about Iveco support perhaps being an issue with (respect to marine diesels anyway). For the right people though (mostly the DIY guys, or the real cost conscious guys, like me), there's nothing else even close to these packages as far as what you get HP wise and technologically (commonrail) for the money. To put this in perspective, a new Volvo D6 375 is well over 30k, heck the D4 260 is 26k. The Cummins QSB is also many thousands more in like power. And. Capt. Ed is right. Iveco is quite the player in the diesel market but I still consider them "new" to the recreational diesel scene.

Remember not too many years ago BMW tried the American marine market and pulled out! That left a lot of unserviceable engines around. The statement that Iveco makes the 5.9 Cummins is news to me. I have never heard that before and seriously doubt it! Gunny

Gunny, I didn't believe it either since the Cummins block is so wildly popular. I did some more research and it appears that Iveco does build these blocks for Cummins in Europe (see boatdiesel post) (http://boatdiesel.com/Forums/Thread.cfm ... y=iveco&mc I'm still not clear if they build only for the European market or stateside also. BTW - I was just impressed by the price for the technology/power. I've had a few conversations with Eddie and his expereince with Cummins was not that great. He has always said that Yanmar out of the box is better. I don't know if Eddie still is but when I was dealing with him and Mack Boring, he was awarded top dealer in the northeast for Yanmar.

You must be dying from anticipation, 370's!!! Does anyone have any performance data on an FBC with that kind of power? And does anyone know how it will handle at 30+ knots? I am seriously kicking around repowering after getting hosed for years at the gasoline pump. But in exchange for that pile of money I want a significant increase over my current 22kt. cruise.

Corey, Welcome aboard. Looks like you've got a 77-81 FBC. What are you running now that can cruise you at 22 knots? Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

I was at Johnsons Saturday removing the counter tops and not much happening. The update is that he has not started either boat. My new engines are sitting in my boat (very sweet looking) but it doesn't look like he has touched either boat yet. I am curious to see how he does the gauges - they are pretty cool looking to be sure. I can't go there too often because it gets me too revved up and it is still January.
