Loreto - 6/06
Loreto - 6/06
My wife and I took a trip down to Loreto earlier this month. We stayed with some neighbors of ours that have a condo down there. We were there for 4 days, and decided to fish on Saturday. Things were reportedly slow for the week leading up to our trip as the wind was up. Luckily, the weather really settled down on Saturday, and our trip was pretty decent. Especially thanks to our panga captain Pancho. Our first stop was on a school Yellowfin. We could clearly see them crashing bait on the surface, sometimes even launching fully out of the water. I managed to raise one 15 lb. football. Unfortunately, we hadn't got the camera out yet, so we didn't get pics of him or his flying friends. The one fish was all we were able to raise on that stop. Our next action didn't come for another couple hours, but it was a double hookup this time. A Dorado for me, and a Marlin for my friend Deborah: I brought my fish to the boat for the first time in short order: However, I should have known that he was just visiting to get a look at us (love that Bertram hat!): Deborah's fish was just running and jumping, so she just held on: After 30 minutes, 4 runs and a lot of sweat, my battle wound down: Coming over the rail, I realized for sure that this was no "school" sized Dorado, this was a BULL: Thank you Pancho for putting us on the fish: Deborah landed her Marlin shortly after mine: On the way in we hooked one more fish which took all 3 of our baits, but got hooked on the last one by Deborah: Sailfish aren't the best eating, so we released it to fight another day: I think my Dorado was about 35 lbs. I'd guess Deborah's fish were both in the 75 lb. class. It was hot out there, but completely enjoyable when you are catching quality fish. Pancho filleted the Dorado and Yellowfin for us. We let him keep the majority of the Marlin, which really helps him and his family. We got one big bag of Marlin fillets though which we had smoked, mmm. We grilled fresh Dorado that night, and brought the rest home. Last week I made seared Ahi with sesame seeds and teriyaki drizzle, and last night, fresh grilled Mahi Mahi again. Both dinners shared with friends, and received rave reviews. In the end, a really memorable trip!
