Bertram 26 Sport Convertible Outboard
Bertram 26 Sport Convertible Outboard
We recently purchased a 1983 26 outboard, after looking for some time. There seems to be very little information available about them. Some say as few as 8 were made; others say as many as 40. I have also heard that they were never actually in production, but were only made to order. Would be interested in any information anyone might have about this classic.

Thanks for the welcome. The Pascoe article is one of the things that decided me on this boat. Any idea on where I might be able to get ahold of an owner's manual? A previous owner replaced all the original teak with black duraboard. Functional but not terribly attractive. My plan is to replace it with teak. An acquaintance suggested using mahogany instead of teak. It is on the cockpit ceilings and trim, not the sole. Why would mahogany be superior or would it?

Jim, I owned a 1983 26' Bertram with the Crusader 165 H.P. inboards. Awesome boat! They made the 26' in the mid 70's ('75 - '76 approx), but that version had twin stern drives. Then in the early 80's they came out again with the 26', but with twin inboards ('83-'84 approx). I have seen a couple of the outboard versions for sale over the years, but don't know whether it was a "to order" boat or not. I have some of the original Bertram brochures on the 26' around somewhere. I'll take a look and see what they say.

Just came across this Bertram 26' Outboard listing on YachtWorld.com Not sure of the validity of the following statements, but seems very possible? This may answer Jim's original inquiry though. This is one of the rarest Bertrams on the planet. According to our knowledge it is number five of the 32 original Bertram factory built outboard models. It left the factory in 1983 as a Bertram 26.II Sport Convertible, model 261 Outboard. The boat is not a 100% factory restoration but for a 27 year old boat it is as good as they come without being complete restorations. Brian thought you might be interested in this boat listing... Have a look at this boat. I have looked at this boat for a customer in Finland. Pretty nice, and we thought the 57K was a bit much. The customer wasn't excited enough to pay that much either, but he hasn't walked away yet. Who knows.... Gene Dugan Boca Raton, Fl. "Nauti Marie" 1989 33 FBC 2007 8.1 Crusaders
