New survey required by insurance???

My boat has not been surveyed since I purchased her 8 years ago. Has anyone had their ins. co. require a new survey? How long apart? Was an in water sufficient or did they require the boat to be pulled? I will be pulling NITES OFF for a short haul soon & was wondering if I should get a new survey. Al

I had one done when I re-powered. If I had not had one done then I doubt I would be looking to get one done now. Is your Ins Co. asking for a new survey?

Al, If you are happy and plan on staying with the same insurance company and they have not asked or there is nothing in the renewal about some date specific survey then I would probably not do one. Unless you have done some major improvements and want to change the "agreed value". If you do have one done then an out of water is the only way to go. With a good new survey in hand that is the time to shop for a new policy.

I have read on several forums where ins.co. require periodic surveys. Have also talked to other boaters that said the same. I have never run into it yet, but with the severe drop in valuations, it wouldn't surprise me if more companies made them a requirement. Since I only haul out every two years, I was wondering if I should get one now. Al

I had to have another survey when I switched to Boat US insurance. In water was all that was required. I think it had been less than 3 years since previous survey.

If your Ins Co didn't ask for one then don't waste the money. Save it for gas down to Plymouth in August.

My insurance company wants one every three years. They have a few boats in the area and sent there own person to do the inspections. In the water and really only looking for real red flag items. At a minimum, I think you should take pic's to document your upgrades. But you shouldn't need to get surveyed unless you want more hull insurance. Rick Ticket 85 SF Merc 454 MPI's Falmouth, MA
