interior remodeling
Can someone give me some words of wisdom on remodeling the interior of my 1983 Convertible. This Bertram is being totally refurbished after Hurricane Katrina put a beating on her. I am interested if anyone has some do's or don'ts or any interior ideas. For that matter any ideas (you know if I had to do it again type of things or I wish I would have that)are appreciated.
Up grade or replace EVERYTHING that is hard to get to, such as wires and waterlines. Pull an extra power line or two for future use or to replace bad ones. Soundproof your engine room, add lighting and sound are a few more things. Study, plan, and research are the most important of all.

BERTRAM PRIDE '07 PLAN TO ATTEND!I agree with Capt. Ed, though could add that a PVC board or laminate headliner could prove to be a maint-free addition. I've seen this done on charter boats with teak strips covering up the joints. Also, I'd say keep as much of the factory joinery as possible, just re-cover with 1/8th in ply or paint. One thing I've done on my boat (B35) was replace the knob style A/C controls with digital. It cost about $350/ea but gives digital control and other features. Even worked with my 30+ year old compressors. btw, flat screen LCD TV's have come down a lot in price and add to the "updated" theme. good luck and keep us posted. br, JohnD John D "Lady D" Bertram 35 Pasadena MD

While on the subject of remodeling the interior of a FBC.. My 1983 FBC interior was hacked up by the previous owner.. ie: there is no setee or anything built-in on the port side of the cabin, and the cabinetry on the stbd side has been modified but crudely and was never completed, so I plan on removing it and replacing it with new. I am comfortable doing finish carpentry and have all the tools. Has anyone done a major replacement of the built-in cabinetwork? If so, do you have any info or pics? How about the forepeak? Has anyone successfully cleaned the mouse fur material which is glued to the interior of the hull? Or replaced it? If so, with what? This is a long term program for me.. I still have lots of other things to do before I start the woodwork. Frank B - IRGuy@aol.com "Phoenix" 1983 FBC Wilmington, NC

Frank B, Just so you are aware, there was never a built in setee on the portside of your boat. The most that would've come from the factory would have been a couch that folded flat. Doug... Thanks. I looked at the '80-'87 FBC brochure line drawings and assumed the "convertible lounge" was a built-in. In any event. I plan on buying some wicker chairs and/or maybe a settee to go on the port side, and make a new counter on the stbd side. I am considering making this in pieces which would be bolted together, so if I even needed to pull the stbd engine I could clear away everything above the engine room hatches. Any suggestions from members here would be very much appreciated. Frank B - IRGuy@aol.com "Phoenix" 1983 FBC Wilmington, NC

Interior topics?? I added cabinets to the deck in front of the window for additional storage (PICTURES ATTACHED.) Managed to get a TV, Microwave and 4 compartments in a total of 4 removable cabinets. Really helped in storing provisions and flatware/glassware along with securing the MW & TV & stereo system. The fronts are a bit spartan as I never got around to adding the teak trim to bring the look in line with that great bertram formica, as you can see from the picture. The thing I liked about these cabinets is that they followed the fiberglass header above instead of being "square." Really blended in well. Trick was finding those compound angles. Instead of a sofa, I went with 2 swivel rockers made for RVs. RV furniture is a bit smaller in footprint but has the same internal dimensions. These chairs were very comfortable while still affording some floor space outside of the center walk. Other than that, Fish Stix cabin was relatively "factory." Hope this helps

While I like the chairs, personally there's nothing better than stretching out on the couch on the boat while watching the Red Sox on a Sat or Sun afternon when I've decided not to go out. This was one of the main reasons I chose the FBC over the SF. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Here are a few shots of my remodel. I have done a few more minor changes since the remodel, and have a few more I want to do. I hope it gives you some ideas. BERTRAM PRIDE '07 PLAN TO ATTEND!Looks great Ed. Where'd you get the couch? Does it fold flat or is it a convertable? Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Ed I'm a bit confused on your boat's layout. I just assumed all 33FBCs were the same basic layout. Do you have 2 staterooms? What is forward of your helmstation? Daniel, Weren't you repowering Geaux Deep with John Deeres or am I thinking of another boat? if so, hows that going?

Dave, Mine is a 1979, in 1980 they added the second stateroom on the starboard side. Looking at the photo above, under the helm on the side, behind the glass is the electrical panel. Next the beige folding doors with the louvers is storage (food), with the air return duct. Inside the forward stateroom is more storage on the right.
