91 Bertram 33 SF

Post by swilczynski »

Happy Holidays ... Looking for some of your expertise and advice. Thinking about buying a 91 33 SF / Yanmar 370's... aside from knowing the Bertram is a great boat, a bit of a novice. The one I'm looking at doesn't have a generator. Not sure what you folks reccommend and ballpark how much one cost installed. Also, are there any major items I should be looking at that may be inherent in the design? And if you know a good surveyor in Cape Cod, MA? Thanks, Scott Scott Wilczynski Future 33 SF Owner

Welcome aboard Scott, glad to you found us. You can use the search box and find a lot of info also. To find a top rated surveyor in your area, go to http://www.marinesurvey.org/ and click on your area for a list. You generally will be in good hands with any of these guys. Tightlines, Capt. Ed

Good Luck, have fun, and ask a lot of questions in your buying adventure. There are many good surveyors in your area. Look up and talk to Robert Gallagher AMS #491 and Gene Barnes. Remember there are buyer surveyors and well as seller surveyors. You want one working for YOU! It will pay for itself. Don't forget a good engine survey as well. http://www.marinesurvey.org If no generator was previosly installed, a ball park new install is around $10 K Capt Rich Catch 22 1989 33 FBC

Go back and read the various forums about purchasing and general repairs. You will walk away with years of knowledge that you can apply. In fact, read Frank's (IR Guy) posts on his recent purchase and repairs, a great deal can be gained there also. Good luck and be sure to keep us all posted with each phase of the purchase process. Do not hesitate to ask questions or for help, as that is what everyone here does and is for, to help each other.

Scott, Welcome aboard. Its always good to see another potential Mass owner. Oddly enough, I think we may represent the majority of owners that frequent this site. Bob Gallagher works for my cousin (Norm LeBlanc) and he has surveyed both my Bertrams (my old 1981 28, and my current 1986 33). He is very thorough and brokers usually tremble at the site of him. While I can't speak to the specifics of the SF, I can tell you that depending on the amount of care given the following can be problematic: 1. Stuffing boxes for mains (usually just need to be re-packed). 2. Stuffing boxes for rudders (ditto). 3. Rudder bearings are usually rusted. 4. The platform where the rudder bearings rest may be rotten. 5. The cockpits are cored and may have rot though this is easily fixed. This being said, given that the boat you are going to look at is a 91 and was recently re-powered, many of these things may have been addressed. Was this boat originally a gas powered boat? Good luck. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Thanks to all! Already feel part of the B33 family ... Doug, it was gas powered until 2002. The conversion looks very professional and may have resolved any issues you have noted in the process (new shafts, etc). Will look at rest. Scott Wilczynski Future 33 SF Owner

Scott, I grew up summers in Falmouth and know a number of people in the area. I repowered my 33' last year with 370 Yanmars and am very happy with performance. You can use the search option on this site and see a lot of information on the repower stats. I'd be happy to help in any way or have a phone conversation if you have particular questions about the Yanmars. Let me know if I can be of help. Happy New Year! Thanks for everyone's help! You were all instrumental in getting me through this. The commercial side is done, next step are the surveys. I'll call Bob Gallegher to get that process started. Any suggestions on a engine guy on the Cape? Also, if you guys were to put a genny in, what make/size would you reccommend and where would you put it - cockpit or house(33 SF w/370 Yanmars)? Lastly, Brian, I'll take you up for the offer ... obviously a lot in common. I'll email directly. Scott Wilczynski Future 33 SF Owner

Ed, Thanks. Are you reccommending this because of the Yanmar connection? Also, how do I know what size to get? Scott Scott Wilczynski Future 33 SF Owner

Yes on Yanmar, and I would not have less than 7kw. 9kw would run everything within reason without problems. The 9kw is only $300 more than 7kw. They have a 5 yr/5000hr warranty too. I also like Northern Lights and Westerberke gensets. Here is the link to the 9NY model for their pdf files. http://www.4norpro.com/literature/marin ... ar_9NY.php

Guys Guys Guys! Calm down with this bigger is better stuff. 9 KW is a bit of overkill. 7 KW is plenty...You need some load on that lttle diesel for it to work without glazing the cylinders. Not sure if the 9KW is larger than the 7KW but you do have a space restraint also. Get the dimentions and if necesarry I'll go mesure my genset space to let you know if it will fit. Just so you know, I have a new 5KW and it is marginal if I run everthing conceivable at the same time but it is pretty nice.

I run 7KW, and sometimes I am concerned with too much load in the summer, air, refrig, ice maker, bat charger, lights, tv, stereo, etc. However, I will defer to you Frank.
