Having owned outboard boats all my life i never had to deal with metal surfaces under the water line except lower units+trim tabs which i would paint with an antifouling spray paint that worked ok.Does anyone paint their running gear with antifouling paint or is the movement around these surfaces enough to knock all the growth off.

I paint the bottom with Micron 66 and have all of my running gear painted except for the props with metal paint, but can't remember the product itself...I'll find out and post it later. Be sure to use an Ablative paint that "wears away" as the non ablative paints tend to build up over the years and eventually has to be removed at a fair cost.

I do it on all the underwater metal, including the props. I use the 2 part Interlux Interprotect 2000E. And 3 coats of Interlux Trilux. For the bottom , I use the Micron Extra. Black bottom and White on the runnig gear. Looks cool, and with the white I can easily distinguish my boat from underwater if there is a lot of traffic in a dive area. Mike, I don't paint my shafts or props, I do paint struts & rudders. To answer your question the movement isn't enough to keep the shafts completely clean, but for the 6 months my boat is in the water, there's not that much build up. Guess I'm more nervous about shaft alignment and just keeping it the best it can be. Props stay clean for the season. Rick Ticket 85 SF Falmouth, MA

Up here in the NE we don't get the growth that the southern boys get. IF you don't haul at least annually I think it is a bad idea. I did go the Interprotect metal prime route once. It was a disaster. I only haul out every 2nd year. Once the paint wore off or even got thin, the Interprotect gave a place for the barnicles & then mussels to grip onto tenaciously. It took some serious work scraping that mess off. When I finally hauled I ground everything down to clean shiny metal. No more problems since. Al 1978 33 FBC NITES OFF

Thanks guys I am going to paint the struts and rudders and leave the shafts bare.They should be pretty easy to clean whe we haul out in the fall
