Florida in the Summer

For this year, I think I am going to try to set up a trip to Florida in the Summer. I am thinking 3rd week of August. I'd like to put together a rendezvous similar to the New England one last year. So all you Florida guys, jump in to the conversation, and let's start working out the logistics. David Sumich 1986 SF - 33 Megabites Huntington Harbour, CA Forum Administrator

Not to pi** in anyone's Cheerios, but wouldn't it make more sense to try and have a Florida event during the winter months? That way some of the NE boys might be tempted to attend. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Hurricane season lasts up till the Holidays, and then we all know how long those last. The next big break where people could come would be Easter, and that would certainly be a possibility, but a little short for time as far as planning for this year goes. I'm not sure where we could get together that would be convenient to have more than one boat there. We're all kind of spread around the state. Maybe Key Largo would be the closest to everybody? You can all motor over here to Melbourne too though

It would have to be during a time when their kids are out of school for a long enough break too. We could do it during the "slow" part of the hurricane season in the late fall, and if it has be to canceled or moved, so be it. I think the odds of having to cancel would still be be there, but hopefully low. But, if there was a hurricane while they were here, we could make them honorary Floridians and board them up with the rest of us. Besides, then I could teach Doug how to speak Southernize. I was thinking of sometime between now and April. I'll be down in Florida mid March for a couple of Red Sox spring training games. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

We'll have to give this some thought. In trying to figure out where everyone in Florida is located, I noticed that there weren't as many Floridians on the board as I had thought. It is hard to tell, because not everyone filled out where they were from when joining. A good number of them are still Ensigns, meaning they have less than 25 posts, so I am not sure how often they view the board to get in on the Rendezvous. The main Florida members are: Tim (Naples) Capt Ed (Port Richey) Sean Burlingham (Melbourne) Capt Gene (Boca Raton) That's 2 on the East and 2 on the West. The problem is even further compounded by the fact that Port Richey is north of Tampa, and Melbourne is about 80-100 miles north of Boca. That is interesting Doug, I never thought about it, but it seems we have all four corners of the peninsula covered, what's the odds of that happening? Port Richey is 33 miles NW of Tampa, and is a costal town on the Gulf (just north of Tarpon Springs). Getting to either coast of Florida is no big deal, as any of us can cross the ditch via the Okeechobee Waterway. Perhaps, a location along the waterway would be interesting, as many may never have transversed locks before, and the location is near Orlando and the Mouse, which could make for a fun side trip especially for those of us with kids, (but aren't we all). For those interested in reading about the Okeechobee Waterway here are a few links:

What a great idea! as for Boca, there are no Marinas here. West Palm Beach., Ft. Lauderdale, or Miami are the only places that can accomadate more than one boat. There are several Marinas up in the Manatee Pocket , St Lucie area. Hell , lets just go to the Bahamas! BTW 3rd week of August might even get some Hurricane planning in too. Gene Dugan

Thanks Gene, I thought it might be fun for everyone, not over priced and a part of Florida the guys up North (heck, may of us too) have or would never see, while being close enough to Orlando for the spouses and kids so they do not get bored talking about Bertrams all day (I can't understand why someone would get bored, but just in case). If we went to the Bahamas, then it wouldn't be a Florida thang (that's "thing" to ya'll Northerners)! [;)] 1979 Bertram 33' FBC ALEXANDRA Port Richey, Florida

While there are four of us in Florida who are active on this forum, there are more that we don't hear from as often as we would like. So perhaps now that David has the email working we can contact these members about getting together this year. Ed, That's a good idea. I can't speak for anybody else on your list, but Ron Limoli (Extractor-in Jupiter, Fl) sold his 33 back in late 2003/early 2004. He hasn't been heard from since. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA
