Transom Door

Post by dougl33 »

In the SF forum, I noticed that the cop boat pictured had what looks to be a factory installed transom door. I'm interested in doing this on my 86 FBC. Anyone had any luck doing this after-market? Does it foul up the strucural integrity? I'm sure there is a right way and a wrong way to do it so I'm open to all stories and suggestions. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth

Doug, you're welcome to come over to Tuck Pt. & check out how mine was done. "THEY" partially glassed a bridging length of about 8" wide by 3/4" thick plywood under the deck. They glassed in ply to make the jamb. Unfortunately they did not use epoxy & did not glass the under deck ply to the transom. (Our boats ABOVE the waterline are incredibly thin). They also created a ply box inside the door skin to match up to the jambs. Covered that in polyester also. Everything probably looked great for a few years. Then the poly cracked & let water in. I stripped the door down to the ply. Dried it all out. Then I rebuilt with woven roving & epoxy. Added epoxied roving & wood inside the jambs & to the transom. I also epoxy glassed the under deck ply to the transom. I intend to add a couple of layers of roving to that. In the water, everything was fine. However, when up on stands, the hull would squeeze the door. Especially since previous owner had removed the swim platform. That platform really stiffens the transom. I still have to redo the top swing down section. I also have to do the final finish fairing on the door inside & the jambs. Then I'll prime & paint. Now that I'm getting use of my arm back, I have to get moving on that part of the project. After my surgery, everything came to a screeching halt! In a few weeks some boats will be pulled & you could swing over & pull in for a visit. Al 1978 33 FBC NITES OFF

Sounds like a plan. I'm a little worried about the travel lift squeezing the transom though. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth
