Fire Suppression

Hey all,

As usual the obligatory, “it”s been quiet around here”.

On my 35 I recently had to pump some cash in her to keep up with the Jones’s. Recored the cockpit sole (again), had the aft salon bulkhead removed and the rot addressed there as well. Fresh paint and non skid for those…

On my last fishing trip before the planned boatyard we got caught riding the edge of a thunderstorm for about 50 miles and then had the pleasure of being in the thunderstorm for the remainder of the 20 miles home, regardless, the generator didn’t sound right by the time I got back to the dock. Started it up a day later and shut it off immediately. Wiped the generator end bearing. Went ahead and replaced the westerbeke back aft with a northern lights and relocated it centerline forward of both mains on top of the water tank. I’m currently very happy with the arrangement. Through a few trips I am averaging about an extra knot all around with a less fuel consumption. Since my boat has a 300 qt fish box glassed in on the transom the weight transfer forward has helped considerably.

On to the actual topic here. My boat still has the original CO2 tank in the port locker just forward of the main salon (1980 model). I’ve had it all gone through before but the time is coming to have it rehydro’ed / serviced and I am contemplating replacement. Who here has removed it from their boats and what did you replace it with? If so, are you happy with the product, etc?

I just put a fireboy in my SF, as the ‘91 halon system was very corroded, to the point I thought it would burst. Still have to wire an electronic box that shuts off the engines if system is called on. Expensive but piece of mind.
