Cabin Bulk head

Post by Capn Tony »

Has anyone tried to paint the cabin bulk head on a SF? I’m tired of cleaning, scrubbing and thinking a coat of paint would be easier to maintain.

I’ve had good luck using a magic eraser. It takes a little rubbing but does the job.

I’ve also want to try WD40. I’ve read that it works great on Formica, which is essentially what the bulkhead material is on my 1988 FBC.

Rich,
Thanks for the reply. The eraser is exactly what I used at the end of last season and it did work. This spring it needs it needs it again. I was hoping there is a more permanent solution to tackling the black galloping glirt. Didn’t know about WD I will give it a try.

Tony,
Let me know how the WD40 works.

I just removed my shrink rap (boat was in the water all winter) and the bulkhead still looks good from last year’s cleaning, but plan on trying the WD40 when it could use a good cleaning again.

Tony,

Frank Price painted the bulkhead on my FBC when I re-powered back in 2007. It's held up great. That said, it's been so long I forget what I did to prep it. I may have hit with a scotch brite pad and then wiped it down with acetone. I taped off the whole area around and Frank sprayed it. I can reach out to him to see if he remembers what he used.

Let me know.

Thanks Doug,
This year I have a lot of time on my hands since the restaurants are leased allowing me to get things done.

As I mentioned previously, last year I used magic eraser on the bulk head and it came out OK but didn’t hold up; it needs it again. I tried a small section with WD and magic eraser the other day . It seemed to slightly discolor but did clean it. I’ve not tried it with bleach which sounds like it might be the best way to go. More to come.

Do not use any bleach or bleach product on your bulk head. I tried a small section using 30 seconds a bleach product and it stained yellow. I went thru 2 magic erasers and found using them with water and wiping with a wet rag as I scrubbed worked the best.
