Greetings everyone.
We recently purchased a 1981 35ft Bertram with 300hp 3208’s. She is good shape for her age. The previous owner removed the generator and we will probably look to replace that over the winter. I have always been an admirer of Bertram’s and am very excited about the new vessel.
Yesterday we took the boat out for a ride and the steering became unresponsive. When I lifted the rear hatch I noticed that the rod between the steering ram and the rudder arm had snapped. Has anyone had to replace that rod and has anyone replaced the ball joints that screw into the ends of that rod?
I appreciate any information this knowledgeable forum might provide.

Dan, save the pieces so you can measure the length. Some members here have had a machine make a new tube out of stainless & then thread the interior ends. The ball joints are easily available online or you can give Rose's Marine in Gloucester, Ma. a call.
