2 wag wire for windlass
2 wag wire for windlass
Hi All, I’m in the process of installing a windlass which of course calls for 2 awg wire to be run from the batteries to the bow and back. I managed to get a snake down the starboard side from the anchor locker back to the engine compartment. Behind the 120 outlet there are two bulk heads that run to the inside of the hull leaving very little space between. Just fit the snake between. Today I will attempt to pull the two wires but my hopes are slim that they’ll fit. My question is: Has anyone done this who might have a better route? I think what I’ll have to do is drill a hole in the first bulkhead which I can reach from behind the settee then get an extension to reach the second which is forward of the plug.

I got very lucky and Bertram had already pre-installed OO cables in my boat. Have you looked to see if you had a spare set that were taped up in the selector switch box? (Obviously, the other end was tie-wrapped in the forward anchor locker bulkhead.) If not, I'd run them up along side the stringers as high up in the bilge as you can and not even attempt to try to get a wire that size along the hull side.

BTW, I ran my cables up the port side toward mid-ships. Went from the battery switch box, between the port engine and center hatch, then through the bulkhead and straight up on that track. It was 68 feet round trip and I needed to be under 70. Rick Ticket 85 SF Merc 454 MPI's Falmouth, MA

Job done Ran from the anchor locker, took the back panel off the little cubbies in the V berth then behind the closet. Took out the 110 outlet for access (though small it helped) then behind the sette. I then took off the side panel above the engine box and fished thru the channel then down to the batteries between the engines. Next the switch on the bridge and the foot switches. Starboard side. I did find a what I think is a broken fresh water pressure valve for which I’ll start a new thread. Thanks for all you help

Hi Captain Tony, I am looking at buying a Bertram 33 and was disappointed to see the lightweight, mixed rode anchor system currently aboard. What did you finish up with after your upgrade? Anchor / windlass / chain size and length? Did you consider adding another separate battery to the forepeak or was the weight too much? Ed
Ed, Went with Anchor lift, really nice guys out of Florida always answer their phone and are very helpful. Windlass model is the Mako, anchor is TPX20 up 50ft & 35Klbs,Bow roller 90104 for anchor up 66lbs,Rode kit 250’ 5/8 galv chain with double braided rope, rocker switch at the helm and foot switches on the bow.

quote:Originally posted by edmundsteele Great info! Thank you, Ed By the way Ed I did not install an additional battery. I use Odessey batteries which I feel are very high and used by the military. They are great but expensive. The pair I have in noe are going on 7 years still strong as ever. I stay plugged in year round.

If you do the cables, you pay a one time charge of about $350. Battery and charger alone will be way more and you'll need a new battery every so often. Tony, where did you buy those batteries? There doesn't seem a good battery distributor on the cape....I don't need them now, but a few more years. Rick Ticket 85 SF Merc 454 MPI's Falmouth, MA
