Relocating Generator
Relocating Generator
Genny bit the bullet the other day. Two shorted stator windings. Looks like no matter what it is going to have to get yanked from the boat and replaced either with a rewound generator end or a totally new generator. Starting to consider relocating the generator into the engine room to get it out of the lazzerette. Anyone have any insight into the job? How hard is it to work on the generator in its new position? Does the weight up forward affect the ride at all? Did you route your wet exhaust back through the original hole at the transom or did you install a new one on the side of the boat? Looking for some insight from someone who has done it or already has it done on their boats.
Hi Asher, I can only tell you that on the 33 it was one of my better improvements. I would think that the 35 would handle the change even better. I swapped the Geny for the water tank & put 70 gallons in the stern. Exhaust goes straight out the side with a new through hull just above the water line with a Vernalift in the bilge. There were pictures of my install somewhere on here but they may be toast since the hack.

We installed a northern lights forward of the star. motor about 15 years ago, still looks new and runs well with about 2600 hours. There about 4 other 35 berts all diesel boats with the same set up in our local area. Everyone is happy and no one feels the handling has changed . Some may jump in and say different about the handling but I can assure you that between myself and friends with 35's we have logged over 10,000 hours without any issue. Must of us are using a side exhaust near the gen set and a separate start battery ., I cut a hatch forward of the engine hatch so service is simple.
Thanks for y'alls replies. Butch, you wouldn't happen to still have some photos from the install would ya? I'm particularly interested in the base that you mounted the generator on. Did you make one out of wood and then glue/ bolt it to the stringers up forward? And as far as the battery and muffler, I'm assuming battery went somewhere port side and muffler just outboard stbd side of the genny?
Asher, sorry I'm not much of a picture guy,, but I could take a few next time I have the hatch open and email them to you. That area of my boat has a plywood floor and I used a few 4x4's under the generator pan to get a little extra height above the water line. Have to look but I think I glassed in a shelf between outboard stringer and hull for muffler and had room for the battery between the outboard side of the gen. set and outboard stringer. I'm in point pleasant NJ and available if you want to take a good look.
I would appreciate the pics Butch, they'll help a lot when trying to set everything up. Right now I'm thinking I can mount it athwartships up against the partial bulkhead ahead of the stbd main and maybe squeeze the muffler immediately outboard of it. The battery could go forward of the muffler I suppose. and I also appreciate the offer to come and peek at your boat but NJ is just too far of a drive from Texas
