galley update

I am looking to make a few changes to the port side galley on my 35. Currently I have a 3 burner princess range and oven under the port windshield. I have a cheap microwave on the port counter top. I was thinking of removing the oven and installing a microwave (flush mount) where the stove is. I don’t plan on roasting a turkey any time soon so I don’t really need an oven. I was thinking I could put a 2 burner electric cook top on the counter right above the microwave. Has anyone done something like this? Any advise on where to find a microwave/cook top (marine grade)? Is there anyone out there that could use a working princess oven?

Chris, Not a bad idea. You can get a convection type microwave that you can build in and still be able to roast if needed. Skip the triple charge of marine grade and go to sears or such.

Brian... A friend gave me a 3 burner Princess electric cooktop. I contacted the manufacturer and was able to get all the parts I needed to rebuild it. Chris... It is no secret that the mfgrs raise their prices by huge amounts when stuff is labeled as marine gear. You can get cooktops and refrigerators from Sears, Lowes and Home Depot for fractions of what marine labeled appliances cost. My new (I think it is a 4 cu ft model) fridge cost less than $100. It is 120 volts, but if I want to run it with the ship's power 12 volt system I can install an inverter. Microwave ovens and coffee pots are so cheap these days they almost give them away. I got my wife involved with the new appliance selections when I decided to build all new cabinets for the main cabin. We plan on getting a counter top microwave oven, maybe with the convection feature. I will make a rack to keep it in place. I hate to pay the inflated boat appliance costs!

Brian... once I remove the stove we can work out a deal.. Here is where I am on marine vs non marine electrical parts. The Last owner installed a houshold hot water heater below decks forward of the port engine. The surveyor pointed out that it isn't ignition protected... Meaning gas fumes plus unexpected spark equals no more "havana day-dreaming" for yours truely! I just don't know if saving a few bucks is worth it... The microwave will be flush mounted with its back exposed to the bilge area. I will speak to the marine electrician I work with to get his 2 cents.

Not ignition protected! You'd better fix that fast. I think re-powering with diesels is that best way to rectify that issue.

For some reason I just knew that would be the suggestion you would make. Swapping the heater is on the things to do list. I only run it now after running the blower.. Would love to repower... coming up about 60K short right about now!
