STUPID!!!!!!!!!!

Post by lobsta1 »

Mea Culpa! I had the NITES OFF wrapped yesterday. Today I went to winterize the engines. Started both up & was warming them up. After about 10 minutes noticed the fumes were getting kind of strong. Out to the cockpit & could see the fumes coming over the gunwale. Finally checked the outside & saw the Velocijets were covered. By then my thinking was a little funny & I thought, leave the engines running & just cut the plastic over the vents. Even after slicing the cover over the vents, the boat was still filling up with fumes. Then it finally dawned on me that the Jet exhausts were lower down. I had sliced the vents for the genny blower.(Told you my thinking was funny.) Cut the cover over the Velocijets & THEN I finally shut the engines off. Even after almost an hour sitting out in the sun I was still a little dizzy. Figured I would take a walk back up to my truck to get some stuff. This is maybe 150 yards. Got to my truck & my legs were so weak & tired I had to sit in the truck for 15 minutes resting. Couldn't drive home & couldn't do any work, so I basically spent the rest of the afternoon sitting out in the open trying to clear my body of the carbon monoxide. As I am typing this the massive headache is finally wearing off. With all the years I've winterized & worked on motors under cover, I have never had anything happen like this before. The thing I am still amazed at is how quickly & how strongly I was affected Al

Geez Al, That could happen to any one. Glad you're OK. I have heard of people dying that way.

If your symptoms were as severe as you describe, my recollection from my last first aid course is that you were pretty close to being a statistic my friend! Now.. get some rest!

Make sure that John Kerry doesn't read that post. With his new boat, you just never know when we're going to get lucky ! That was scary, glad you're OK Capt'n. It almost compares to me stabbing myself in the wrist ! Rick Ticket 85 SF Merc 454 MPI's Falmouth, MA
