Engine Zincs

Sorry to be such a newbie here. I have a 33 SF with twin 3208T. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how many, and where, and possibly the size of the engine zincs? I opened up the genset zinc this weekend and it was 98% gone. Not broken off, but gone so I need to check the engines sooner rather than later. Thanks for any help.

No need to apologize. We all need to start somewhere. I have Cummins, but I'm sure a Cat owner will chime in. Welcome aboard. What year is your boat?

Welcome, I have Cummins but my manual has the information in it. Have you looked in your manual? If you don't have the manual it may be something you may want to pick up for in the future. Buzz

I may need to find a manual. I don't believe it was included with all the other component manuals. I bought a parts manual for the engines, but it doesn't list the zincs.

You could also try boatdiesel.com

Have you given your local Cat Dealer a call. I'm sure their parts department could tell you. Look on Ebay for a manual I found one cheap for a Detriot one time. Buzz

Have you tried taking them out and going to your local marine supply and matching them up? Are they so far gone that you can't tell how long they used to be? Buzz

I don't know the location of them yet to check. From the research I've done there are probably one in each Heat Exchanger and possibly a couple more. I will check with the CAT parts place tomorrow.

One large and two small zincs in each heat exchanger. These are in the end caps. Learn their location and visit them often. That's it... unless you have raw-water fed gear coolers, and if so there should be a zinc in that. I have the engine-water fed gear coolers (and suspect bertram did them all this way) so mine don't have gear cooler zincs. I've heard of zincs in the exhaust elbow. However my factory stainless steel elbows did not have them, and my new custom elbows don't either.

As Sean said one big one on the left hand side at the bottom of the end cap. The right side may or may not have two small pencil zinc. The gear may or may not have a zinc. If it does the bolt head is easy to see. My 3208 cats only have one zinc in the heat exchangers
