cummins running takeouts
Men: Before i go on with this post,i'll admit something upfront...my boat is not a Bertram...i have a 31 Northcoast (very similar to the "blackfin 31). Anyway - my boat is powered with a pair of 3208T cats @ 320HP. The engines are in great shape and i've worked with Ransome Cat to do any maintenance that i couldn[t do myself. Anyway - they run fantastic and push the boat into the 23-24kt range @2400RPMs. ...so whats my issue? ...well as the north coast is an "express" fisherman, there is really not a lot of room to work on these engine. And as these engines wiegh in at about 2000lbs fully loaded with all required fluids, they put quote a bit of extra weight on the boat. I was lucky enouhg to get to speak with charles jannace about this and he explained the boat was not really designed for the wieght. Anyway - the boat is not 21 years old and i'm planning to do some major cleanup and replacement of some systems over next year. Will be taking the engines out so that i can clean, paint the engine room, replace some battery wiring, new fuel lines, replace the bonding systems, seacock valves, etc. While the engines are out, i'll do whatever cleaning, painting and other maintenance they need. ...but as i started to mull it over, i began o wonder if someone who had more room in their engineroom, might appreciate the cats more...and what might be the cost of selling my engines in exchange for smaller Cummins Bs...as my boat is already set up for the diesels and the cats have the ZF 225 gears (same gear as the ZF220 but with a 5degree angle instead of 10), i was envisioning i would not have a whole lot of additional costs that typically come with a gas to deisel repower, or a diesel repower to much higher HP. I guess the straight forward questions are: does anyone have some idea of what a pair of good RTO 3208T engines w/ 1600hours might be worth and what might it cost to find similar HP cummins B (i guess the 330 or 370 B series?
