exhaust water

I have periodic surges of water out of the side ports of my exhaust. The yard says that this is a sign of delaminating mufflers, and the water should only come out the back of the boat, and gas (with a little spray) should come out the sides. Are they leading me on or could there be an issue here? Thanks, Scott.

Are you talking about water surging out the "mail slots" on the sides of the boat? How much water is coming out? When does it happen when you're running, backing up or just sitting? Buzz

There's always a little water coming out of my velocijets when I'm at cruise speed. It's more of a very fine spray. It's done it for the last 12 Summers and I don't think that I'm the only one. Just for laughs, did you ask your yard how much it would be to replace the mufflers ? Rick Ticket 85 SF Merc 454 MPI's Falmouth, MA

Like Rick says, a fine spray along with the exhaust gas come out of the "mail slots". The transom outlets should have a continous flow of water. I would check to see that this is the case. If water stops coming out of the transom while a large amount "surges" out of the mail slots I think you may have a problem.

It's more of a fine spray on mine too. If you were to stick your hand in front of the "mail slot" it would get wet. Buzz

I have a fine spray at cruise, but I have intermittent 'gushes' of a couple of quarts of water out the mail slots when I am idling. There is constant flow of water out the back but it seems to surge, with some times lower and sometimes higher flow when I am idling.

My diesels put out a small amount of water through the mailslots at idle, and much more when the engine speed is rapidly increased from idle. I can get several gallons almost instantaneously shooting about 10 feet. This is a great way to deluge the tourists walking down the floats in a marina!

Scott, it appears everyone with the slots has some water coming out of them. Buzz

Thanks, I think my yard may be excessively vigilant...
