Hi Guys, Can anyone recommend a good marine surveyor in the Ft. Lauderdale area? In addition I am looking for a broker to act on my behalf as I attempt to purchase a boat. Thanks in advance. Franco

Hi Franco, I've used a very good surveyor for years & he's reasonable & well respected. As far as a broker goes, do you really need one? I can steer you in the right direction here as well. Marine surveyors will do a pre-purchase just like a home inspector unless you tell them your specific concerns. Two pages of recommendations about missing safety gear on a boat that was in the yard I thought was a waste of time (Life jackets and placards c02 detectors, etc.) Have the guy inspect the stringers, hull and decks soundness, fuel tank, rudder boards and bearings shaft logs and thru hulls, engine mounts. (let me guess the thru-hulls will all be stiff) To spend a lot of time testing every pump is something you can do as the buyer. Have the owner show you what works or doesn't work. The new thing are gfi outlets and be aware most windows will or have leaked at one time or another.. Have the engines looked at by a certified mechanic for whatever brand they are. My advice be prepared for the somethings gonna break syndrome and hope its only a pump verses an engine. Good luck and I would be happy to help you look at a boat and advise you on what to offer as a first offer.

I used a gentleman by the name of Ray Walden to survey my Bertram 35. Out of all the boats I have had surveyed I fell he did the best and most through job. I highly recommend him. His number is 804-815-8647. Mike.

For a hull survey try Jack Hornor in Annapolis 410-451-8133. For engines use a company that sells and services the same.
