Thank God it's a Bertram

I simply don't understand what goes through a boat owner's mind when it comes time to sell thier boat. I always say "You never get a second chance to make a first impression" and "first impressions are everything". So all I can say about this 83 35 Bert. is that I was impressed by the relativly new Furuno 585 and it's new transducer!! that's it, everything elese needed major attention. For openers it needed 20-25K just to make the mechanical systems work, before cosmetics and small items. Overall a good 40-50K to make it nice and you still haven't touched the motors. I then saw a 35 Viking that was almost as bad, whose owner was onboard when I visited. Upon inspection of the Cats I questioned him about the gallon or 2 of motor oil under the rusted 3208's oil pans!! He responded with a hearty "Show me a diesel boat that doesn't have oil in the bilge" Let's hope for the environment's sake that everyone with a diesel boat doesn't discharge thier bilges! You know what, I take it back on second thought the Viking was worse than the 35Bert. All in all they made the 33B project boat look good, if you can believe that!!

Come away from the basement and don't let price be your guide to a boat. Last week you posted the rust bowl, in the end you get what you pay for... Captain Larry Wren 305-360-4900 www.apirateschoice.com

Yeah and I was pretty sure I was looking at the bottom of the rustbowl!!!!! only to have sunk to lower depths!! Hey Lwren,FWIW some more interior shots would go a long way in your sale JMHO and what's up with the Merritt? The Merritt in the last month has had the bottom in and outside stripped and a layer of bi axial fiberglass added along with a new keel. The tower has been set in place also. I picked up the 1" divinacal for my cockpit sub floors along with foam/glass stringers to replace ribs and stringers where needed. Its to humid to start painting this month but the hull will either be Stark White or Fighting Lady Yellow soon. The air file and epoxy fairing materials are at the ready but when its 96 degrees other work is preferred. I also received the 110 and 12 volt panels last week and will have the boat wired prior to bedding the engines. I am still trying to decide between the 355 QSB or the mechanical 330s and am waiting and should be ordering one or the other in the text week or so. Either one according to the calculators on Boatdiesel I will cruise around 20 knots at 1800 rpm with 30 along with wot 30 knots also have obtained the original factory rudders and struts for the boat. Over all its been a busy month! When the Merritt is almost complete (hull painted and in the water.) the Bertram will get the house painted and floors refinished inside and out and be seriousily for sale. I will take some pictures today, its hard to get a good photo of anything inside of the boat due to the angles when you take a picture. At one time I entertained a having a professional photograph the inside of the Bertram boat as maybe they could do a better job than I. Even tried opening the windows and pointing the camera in. PS I have diaper under my diesels an there are never more than a couple of drips of oil! the bilge water is clean always. The places I have had drips from are sending unit fittings that needed to be snugged. I am lucky as i spend time on the boat daily and can address problems before they are major, along with the fact the engines are run twice a week weather the boat goes out or not. I will tell you that when I was looking at boats most I looked didn't pass my scrutiny and there were a couple ( that's the reason I decided to buy the Merritt and restore her as for good or bad I will have everything the way I want it). Don't despair or give up due to the fact there's a lot of junk on the market like all the boats at National Liquidators. Buying a repo is scary as the boat was probably not taken care of and the crap run out of them as the owners knew they were going to lose the boat. Also after you buy be ready for the somethings gonna break factor. When I got the 33fbc two weeks after she was mine the damper plate on the starboard engine that couples the flywheel to the transmission went bad, something seems to happen on all of them! I looked at a 33 SF that I wish I bought with 370 Cummings and 2" shafts and the only problem was minor rust on the generator due to hatch leakage. That was three years ago and I still kick myself for not buying. I would of had to have a tower built along with new riggers as the lee 25' single spreaders are not what I need. The price on that boat was 95 k non negotiable. I know the owner and it is still for sale and just came out of the yard for annual visit. Hey Larry, There's only two colors for a boat....white & wrong ! But sounds like you're getting down and dirty with the Merritt. Even if it's Yellow I'll bet she's going to be a beauty. Rick Ticket 85 SF Merc 454 MPI's Falmouth, MA
