Trim tabs question

Post by DemianM »

I have been searching the forum, but still need a little help diagnosing my tabs problem. Thing is, the pump seems to work, but sounds like if it were dead, like if it were "tired" after 28 years of service :) Last year filled the pump and it started working again after a leak but now it seems like it is not working (there is no changes at cruise speed). So, I am most surely going with a whole new unit, but, are the cylinders prone to fail also? I do not want to replace them to avoid going out of the water.... I wanted to stick with the original brand (insta trim) but should I retrofit bennett´s system? Thanks in advance!

Assuming they are similar to Bennett's with only one oil line to each tab. If the cylinders are failing you will lose oil and or suck in water as they are only single stroke with no interior seal (they push and pull the oil rather than push it in both directions). If you aren't losing oil it seems you have a pump problem.

I installed new pistons on the original Bennett tabs a few years ago. Very easy to do.
