stress fractures below the hull

Post by jamjen1984 »

The 1984 bertram I had surveyed has stress fractures below the water line,The boat has been canyon fished for 20 years in the northeast and has taken a pounding. I have been told the fractures need to be taken care of not now but sooner or later. Can anyone here comment on what I am getting into if I go ahead with the purchase,, thanks tom

We all have to make our own choice of boat to purchase. I have passed on boats after various surveys for various reasons including a Tollycraft with stress cracks and oil canning below the water line. I would look at some other boats on the market.

Could you see if the stringers were all still attached properly? Buzz

Tom, Most of the stess fractures I've seen have been on the top of the deck rail or has been limited to some gel-coat crazing in the top sides. These 2 items are fairly common and are nothing to worry about. I don't believe anyone here has had your particular issue crop up. Are you sure they are actually stress fractures? As Buzz said, can you determine if the stringers are all still attached? Same question with the bulkheads.

Read what Pascoe has to say about the 33B http://www.yachtsurvey.com/boatreviews/ ... _33_sf.htm You should take a close at the forward bulkhead. It has probably separated from the hull and may even be cracked. It may also have been repaired. I have seen a few 33B's with these problems. As Pascoe says it is not a big deal; but you want to look for broken tabbing, bulkheads, and stringers. The Cook gelcoat is very hard, that is why 40 year old Bertrams can still a gelcoat to shine, but it does stress crack. I don't know what part of the world you are in; but did the surveyor note any broken tabbing?

According to his profile, he's from NY. If I had to guess, I'd say this is the boat: http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1984/Be ... ted-States

I just checked my profile and it has an old email address. I have corrected the profile. I have seen a couple 33B's with a cracked bulkhead and with major tab delaminations. Once repaired I don't really think it is a big deal. The repair process is just dusty and messy. I doubt there is a fiberglass issue. That should be clear when looking from inside of the hull. The green dye should be green and not white or milky looking. If the hull really has damage move on.

FWIW, my yard is trying to sell a 35 at a rediculously low price due to owner death and wife just wanting it gone. They have maintained the boat for as long as its been around and have complete history. Great looking fishing boat chair and all. I dont think it's listed any place but send me an email if interested I'll point you in the right direction.

New member here guys, great site. looking to upgrade to a 33 FBC. The 33 FBC in question here is still for sale in NY. I just looked at it. The forward bulk head has had some repair to it, there is evidence of some stress cracks along the outside gel coat way above the water line. Did not see any below. Jamjen1984 do you have any more info you could share or surveyer info? Thanks Wayne
