Running Gear
Running Gear
Had a bad day today..... Hit a log and caused damage to the port running gear. I put on the spare prop and the vibration continued. I plan on hauling out on Thursday. I anticipate a shaft and/or strut problem. I am certain to need a cutlass bearing. Any suggestions on where to look for parts. The previous owner repowered to Cat 3208's. He left the inch and 3/8th gear in place. This would be the right time to jump up to inch and a half, but I am not ready for the bill!! Some say there is no need anyhow. Just looking for some help, Chris
Inshore is better. Although, I can't come in from offshore!
Oh BTW... I have spoken with High Tide Marine in the past and will probably end up with that route. I am in RI and hope to do something locally and sooner. The Giants are here!! I did the straight edge test with the board clamped to the rudder while spinning the prop. It appears that the shaft will need to be tweeked! I just assume do it all and have piece of mind. On page 4 of the posts, I asked many questions about doing the boat over. I just got too busy with work. With today's stateof affairs, I should be happy. I should get into things this fall. I then hope to move down to NC and enjoy life a bit more. Chris

Chris, Sorry to hear of your bad luck. There's plenty of B33's running 1-3/8 with the 3208's and as long as you're not going any higer than cummins or yanmar 315/330's you'd probably be ok. I just repowered and my struts where 1250 each not including the time to get them shimed right and that was for 1-3/4 barrel but same dimensions as the old. I don't recall what the shafts cost as it was buried with a bunch of other re-power stuff. Another thing to consider is that if you up shaft for a future repower, the new install may require a longer/shorter shaft length. If you just doing it for safety, I just stick with what you have and use aquamet22 grade. just my .02, good luck and let us know how you make out.
