Transducer questions.

Can I use a IN-HULL sonar transducer(the kind epoxied inside the hull that shoots through the hull) on my bottom sounder. I have been having some problems with my bottom sounder and went to visit an "unfamilliar" electronics guy. He said my transducer is bad and that is very possible. When we talked about putting a new one in he said I could not use one because of the hull construction method. Our Bertrams are coreless right? Does anyone use this type of transducer. I would really prefer to use this kind of tranducer because it is easier to install, maintain and it costs less!!! Any feed back on this would be really appreciated. Thanks!!!!

All our hulls are solid glass. Don't see why you can't use an in hull, except if you fish a lot. I think you might lose to much resolution Al

You will be fine. We are solid glass. Those t/d are bad in cored hulls. I think you lose 10-20% of the sensitivity, BUT - Plenty of charters I know have them and say they are fine.

Don't you get better sensity with a thru hull? Is there a reason you don't want a thru hull? Buzz

Honestly I dont want to pay to have the boat hauled in the middle of summer. I see it as more of a temporary fix until I do my winter haul-out and will do everything at once. Thru-Hulls are MUCH more sensitive but a In-Hull will do fine for know, I do know a couple of guys that use them in their smaller CCs and WAs and say they are great for fishing although I am sure the Thru-hull would do a much better job.

Thom; Several years from now you will be a lot happier going with a quality thru-hull. I have two Furunos, but there are still transducer unit on the hull that are not connected any more. Do it right the first time and you will not have to second guess yourself. You own a great Bertram, keep it that way. IMHO Capt LuLu

I bought a boat years ago with a in hull transducer that was a thru hull transducer mounted as a in hull. They used a sealant to glue it to the hull. It worked OK. When I hauled the boat I pulled it loose from the hull and remounted it as a thru hull. It worked better when mounted as a thru hull. Back then they didn't make in hull transducers or if they did I didn't know about them. Buzz
