Phoenix update?
Frank, have you finished your house? What's going on with the Phoenix restoration? Buzz buzzk 1988 Bertram 33 FBC Buzz Off Morehead City, NC

Hi Buzz... Well.. I installed the last piece of trim in my upstairs hallway yesterday. Finished the hardwood floor last week. Both upstairs bedrooms are completed. All I need to do now is get the painting stuff out and paint some trim and walls in the hallway. (Actually, my wife does most of the painting.. and I really don't like to do that anyway). Should be wrapped up in another week. I do have a few doors and drawers to build for the built-ins, but need to clean out some junk out of the garage and shop so I can move power tools around and get into door/drawer/boat rebuilding mode. So.. I have done almost nothing to "Phoenix" this summer except run the engines occasionally. I have located a local company that sells hardwoods and veneered plywood at reasonable prices.. and am planning on resurfacing the small amount of Bertram imitation oak formica I have with real mahogany veneer. Will scrap the existing cabin cabinetry and replace it with new made of mahogany veneered plywood and real mahogany face frames, probably stained a light mahogany.. It is interesting, the owner of the hardwood place has been in that business all his life.. he sold hardwoods to Bertram, Hatteras, etc during the 70's and 80's and says he probably sold Bertram the wood we all have in our boats today! I did buy new batteries.. all Optimas.. 4 red top starting and two blue top deep cycle for the house power/generator starting. Sams Club had them at the old prices, so I bought them on the spot.. about $25 each less than Batteries Plus wanted. Three Group 24/34 batteries will fit in one 8D battery box, so all 6 will fit between the engines where the 2 8Ds are now. This will let me remove the Group 24 generator/house battery I had temporarily placed under the stbd hatch in the cockpit. Better weight distribution, and easier access. Have borrowed a come-along from my neighbor and with two step ladders and a 4x4 I think I will be able to hoist the old 8Ds out of the engine room myself. I will be glad to see those 160 pound monsters go! Hope you have enjoyed "Buzz Off" as much as I wish I could have enjoyed "Phoenix" this summer. But to be perfectly honest, I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I was going to be working on the house all summer.. I can't have two major projects going at the same time. I am told a divorce is more expensive than a boat restoration! Frank B - IRGuy@aol.com "Phoenix" 1983 FBC Wilmington, NC
