Transporting a Bertram 35
Transporting a Bertram 35
New to this group and really enjoying the wealth of information here. Sold my Blackfin 32 Flybridge last year and planning on buying a Bertram 35. However, I want to buy an 82 to 85 model with diesels and they're almost impossible to find out here on the West Coast. So looking to make a purchase in the Midwest or East Coast andship by truck to Southern CA. Is it possible to ship a B35 without taking off the bridge? Looks to me like the height from the keel to the top of the windscreen is 14'3" and that kind of height would require removal of the bridge. Any information and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Mike Dana Point, CA
dpmike... Welcome to the best gathering place of Bertram 33 and 35 owners you can find. Your same issue came up a few months ago.. one of our newer bretheren did just what you are asking about. Mike Colbach ("Shake and Bake") had a gasser 35 moved from the east to the west coast. Before the move the yard where the boat was prepped filled the gas tank. When he boarded the boat on the west coast all the gas was in the bilge. Not a happy time for him! I don't recall if he removed the flybridge. He turns up here regularly, but I believe these days he is fishing pretty often so he is busy, but I am sure he will respond when he sees your request. dpmike, There was a similar question on the "Sportfish" forum.. Just posted this on there. Might be interesting for you.. Let me know if I can help.. Good luck, John ------------------------- Sammi, I work for a logistics company/shipowner in Houston and there is a trucking company that we work with very often that does boat transport. The name of the trucker is Big Boat Transport and they are located in Lufkin, Texas (quite landlocked for a boat transporter!). The last time I visited them they had several boats in their yard, including an older 55 Hatteras Sportfish. Imagine seeing a 55 Hatteras in Lufkin. They have a specialized low boy trailer that they use for boat transports. I can put you in touch with them if you like. Just let me know. Good luck with the "33" search. I hope to be starting one in the next 2 years myself. Billfished in the Tx Gulf for years on my uncle's 31 Bahia Mar and then his 1983 33 Sportfish. Mike, I bought my 35 in MD and considered having it transported to upstate NY. The cost was extremely high due to the permits needed to cross each state. In some states like CT they required a police escort due to the Beam of the boat, anything over 10' requires a police car in front and a second vehicle behind with a flashing light. The other reason I decided not to go by land is the fact that the bridge had to come off. I didn't feel that all would go back as it came off. I motored up to lake Ontario for a 1/4 of the cost and had a great trip. Good luck, Mike....
