I have a 1973 Onan 6.5KW MCCK generator in my B-35. Could anyone tell me how much oil and what weight oil I should use when changing it? Thanks, Mike....

Mike, I happened to have the book for the MCCK handy. The 6.5kw takes 3.5 quarts of oil. The reccomended weight is(from the book): temp -- weight 0f to 80f -- 10W-30 or 10W-50 20f to 100f -- 20W-40 or 20W50 30f to 100f -- 30 60f to 100f -- 40 If you want the manual I have, send me your address and I'll drop it in the mail. Mine had been replaced with an MCE and that's being replaced with a diesel westerbeke. So if you know anybody that needs a decent genset for a cheap price send them my way. John, Did you ever get a chance to send me the Generator manual? I haven't received anything yet. Would you know know to decreases the volts the generator is putting out? My generator is putting out 156 volts, someone said there is a way to turn down the output, any suggestions? Thanks, Mike.....

Guy's, My generator is putting out 156 volts. Someone told me all I have to do is slow the RMP's down? Does anyone know how to do this on this MCCK Generator? I tried adjusting the governor linkage but that did nothing? Any advice would be appreciated... Thanks, Mike......

Mike, The speed will control the frequency as well as the voltage. I suggest you get one of those fancy multi-meters that shows the hertz before changing the speed of the engine. If you do need to change the speed I think that there is a spring with an adjuster on it that attaches to the throttle. It looks sortof like a throttle return spring but adjusts the preload on the governor and hence the speed. P.S. I'm not much of a genset mechanic, my answer is to throw it away and buy a new one , so someone else may have better advice than me.

Mike, sorry for the delay I was away & then work got kind of crazy. I'll get them in the mail tomorrow. On my MCE I had an Onan tech tune it when I first got my boat. He adjusted the rpms at about 3 different locations using the multi-meter. It ran like a champ since then. BTW, if you find yourself needing one I still have mine it's in decent shape, has 1200hrs on it. John & Frank, Thanks for your help. I'll contact the marina and see if they can adjust it for me. As far as replacing it, it runs like a top and only has 525 hours on. Thanks again, Mike....

I use the Hz function of my meter to set the correct RPMs. I have a Westerbeke so I adjust at the linkage. Can't help with the on-no; but you just need to get it around 60Hz. You also need a load on it when tuning. If yours is putting out a 156 volts with load you may other problems like the voltage regulator. Mine cranks out 130 volts at 60Hz with about a 50% load. She drops to 115-120V around a 6KW load. I have an 8KW Westerbeke. Charlie
