If I had not re-powered with diesels this past winter, I would've eventually gone with Crusaders. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Steve, I have 8.1 Crusaders in my 35 and she fly’s. My gas consumption is .8 miles per/gal @ 3200 rpm’s I’m cruising at 20 kts. I have never run WOT for any length of time but I know she will do the high 30 mph, not to mention the cost was half that of new diesel. Mike.

That's not bad at all - is very close to diesel fuel economy. Steve, I have been very happy with these motors, they came as a package with Hurth transmissions. Mike….

Those numbers are not bad at all - speed and burn seem pretty good

Steve, Crusaders have been a better engine because more of their exhaust system was FW cooled than other engines. But now Merc is right up there with them. The last I checked at a boat show both Crusaders & Merc's are 85% FW cooled. I believe that they are also the same block. My point is that Merc is playing catch up and maybe has better deals on a very similar engine. My Year 2000 7.4 MPI's are nice engines except for the exhaust manifolds. They're 100% salt water cooled. But Crusader was up for sale when I repowered and I was a little nervous with replacement parts. So now the playing field is more level and I'd bet that playing them against each other, complaining about gas prices and being patient; will amount to some nice discounts from either company. Good luck ! Rick Ticket 85 SF Falmouth, MA

I just finished repowering with 8.1 385 hps. Cost was $13888.00 inc. the Hurth 2.5:1. New shafts, dripless shaft seals. If you do nothing else probably $40K. I ended up 10K over. Just need to die a couple of years early when the money is gone. Gene Dugan Boca Raton, Fl. "Nauti Marie" 1989 33 FBC

Gene.. being retired (at least semi-retired) I am always wondering how to budget our assets so there is enough money left to bury my wife and me. But.. you are the first guy I have heard who is working backwards. I always looked at how to be sure the money lasted until I die.. you are looking at how to die when your money runs out! I wonder which of us is right? Frank B - IRGuy@aol.com "Phoenix" 1983 FBC Wilmington, NC
