dinghy carrier

Post by top dog »

Hey guys i hope you are all well i just bought a 10 foot inflatable dinghy and yamaha ob. for the kids (yeah right) and i was wondering what carriers or davits etc has anyone used on their 33 berts . I bought one of those plastics ring jobs that hold the inflatable up agints my transom but i would like the ones that let me keep engine on and it rides horizontal off the swim platform . I dont like the idea of my boat name being covered ( in case of emergency) and it is ruff for me to take the engine off all the time. Your help is always appreciated HAVE A GREAT SUMMER...Pete

I have thought about that problem for years. What I have always done is just turned it upside down on the deck, like some of the pictures on this site. It is not the real easy to do but I can still do it by myself. I usually put it on the deck in the summer and take it off in the winter. You can get away with that in Florida. They are too much in the way if you hang it on the transom. Jeff Now and Then

thanx jeff i thought about that too but i will use it several times a weeh in the summer and i have a real bad back . I found a rather inexpensive carrier fpr the swim platform that allows me to even leave the little outboard on and when i go fishing i can leave it in my slip. The thing will come of very easy not interfearing when i fish its awsome ...Pete

Double that request, I'd like to see what you found too. Tying it to the transom is a big pain for me. It gets in the way of the dock lines, it collects soot, and I don't like covering up the boat name. I've seen the circular hoops you can put on the swim platform and pivot the dinghy on its sponsons (and have brackets for those installed, from a previous owner) but don't see how that solves my three problems above. If you found something better, please share! Sean Burlingham "Island Time" 1987 Bertram 33 SF Melbourne, FL SBurlingham@cfl.rr.com

I just bought a neat 2004 10'2" West/Avon solid bottom/transom dinghy with of all things a 15HP Mercury 4 stroke OB. The boat weighs about 110 lbs, and the engine about 120 lbs. The guy used it to tow his kid wakeboarding. I have used it once so far and at half throttle it screams.. I did not have the nerve to go any faster. It has a set of removable brackets that mount on the rigid bottom which terminate in arms that extend over the port sponson, with an oval ring on each arm. These engage to two snap catches mounted on a swim platform (which I need to build/install one day). You attach the dingy rings to the two catches, and using a line you reach over the transom and pull the dinghy to a vertical position using the snap catches as hinges. Looks like a neat rig except I also don't like the idea of a big ugly thing across my stern covering the boat name. Not sure if I would get any soot on it because I have the side exhaust VelociJet system. Also, I'm pretty sure that removing an engine this heavy will be a PITA, and suspect I will need some type of simple hoist deal.. some of the charter guys with B33s here install a 3" dia stainless pipe vertically aft of the cabin, which mounts on the cockpit floor and the aft cabin bulkhead. This has a small swing arm and hook for use lifting big fish with a block and tackle.. would be great for lifting an engine. Not sure if I like the looks of davits on the transom any more than I like having the dinghy on edge vertical on the swim platform. Don't mind towing a dinghy short distances, but need to get a better storage method. Possibly have the hoist deal for the motor and build a set of brackets for the foredeck and store it there for longer trips? Frank B - IRGuy@aol.com "Phoenix" 1983 FBC Wilmington, NC

I mount my dinghy up on the bow. I have an 8'6"" AB rigid bottom with a 9.9 Nissan 4 stroke. The dinghy weighs about 95lbs and the motor weighs 88lbs. The dinghy isn't that much heavier than a similarly sized inflatable bottom dinghy and is just the right length so I can mount it with the dinghy's bow pointed towards the boat's bow and still have access to the forward cleats. The thing absolutely screams. One of these days I'll have to take a handheld GPS with me to verify the speed. The boat is just light enough that my wife and I can fairly easily get it on and off the bow. I then tie the dinghy off across the swim platform and drop the engine on. I'm not going to lie, I'm usually sweating my ass off by the time I'm done, but I hate the look of the dinghy on the transom. It just doesn't look very nautical. Its the same reason I'm such a stickler about flying colors correctly and don't have fender racks. They just look like crap on any boat[xx(] (sorry Bill[;)]). Jeff i have not bought it yet i will today the people who sell it is allinflatables.com its called the pull-on dinghy davit and it cost about$869. and a little more if you may need extensions hey that is cheaper than a winch and deck davits and all the drilling etc. my dinghy is a 10 footer and its bottom is 57 inches and my swim platform is 24 inches so i will figure out today what i need to order. One of my buddies at my marina has had it for a while and he loves it. My idea is that when i go fishing i just leave it in my slip and easily remove the brackets like he does. Also SEAN if you want the hoops i will give you mine for free as i will no longer need them when i use this system i got them a month ago anf they are new, i also do not like to cover my boats name...Pete

I keep a knife handy to cut the lines in case I need to "deploy" the "safety raft" in a hurry. Shoot me an e-mail at SBurlingham@cfl.rr.com. I would be happy to put the rings to use until I come up with a better system, as you have. Would love to see some pics of that setup. Enough with the fender rack issue[xx(]... There's lots of things that look like crap on all our boats, like sirens. Bill 1988 33 FBC Ipswich, Ma. > ~-------

I have 11.2 with a 15hp. I deflate it and pack it in the cockpit for Bahama crossings. After I blow it up, I can slow troll it between islands, or take the engine off and pull it over the transom and take off. Just toss it out at the next destination. A real pita, the motor is getting heavier every year. But I'm not putting any davits or mounts on my boat. I also have a 13 Avon with a 35hp on it. I towed it 1 time to the islands. Never again. When it turns to crap..you have that to deal with. Short hauls..I'll drag it. But for long ones the other dingy comes out of the box. Gene Dugan Boca Raton, Fl. "Nauti Marie" 1989 33 FBC

Though I don't like the dingy on the transom either, I have Weaver Dinghy Davits for my Boston Whaler 9' Tender that I bring with me on the long trips or when we need a shore shuttle. It's a quick on and off now and then just drop the outboard on. Brian '90 Bertram 33' FBC Never Say Never Guilford, CT (Homeport) Kinnelon, NJ (Home)
