Hurricane Matthew
Well, we were lucky but not unscathed. The entire town is without power until Wednesday or Thursday. Using my portable 7.5KW & back-feeding the panels. We're on water rations because the city can't pump fresh water. We lost 3 large trees and about a third of our roofing shingles. The tide surge was about 5 feet. The old Bert rode out another one in stride though. The new pilings worked great even though the dock was completely submerged by about 2 feet of water. I learned that I needed more chafing gear and longer lines. Hopefully, it will be a while before we get the next one.

Joe, Sorry to hear about the damage to your home. We live on the east side of Orlando, and we lost most of the south side of our roof in Charlie (2004). A microbust came across our roof and dumped all of the shingles ont he northside of our house (it faces north) , all over the north lawn and my F250. Completely new roof required; 20k. I spent every morning for a week nailing down 20 pound roofing felt on the roof to keep out the August rains. Fortunately we are later in the season, so hopefully you won't need any secondary damage. Central Florida was blue tarp city for two years after that. Hopefully you can get fast roof repairs and mitigate your damage. Glad the boat came otu OK. Hope you have it under control. Chip
Joe, I'm glad your powers back on and your boat didn't have any damage. I know everyone talks about SE Florida and hurricanes but in the last 20 years I believe Morehead's had more hurricanes. I remember one year having 2 hurricanes, losing power for one week with one and two weeks with the other. I'm in the real estate rental business on the beach and this is the first storm that I didn't receive any damage at all, not even one shingle. At least that I know about. One year we had a little cat 1 storm that took 36 hours to go 20 miles from Emerald Isle to Morehead and that storm did more damage to my property than some Cat 3 storms did. The storms do get old after a while but I wouldn't be satisfied not living on the water.

Hey everyone! Hope all are safe. We are and I am thankful that we are. Edisto took a pretty good shot from Matthew but the old boat is still floating and the house is still standing. We have a fair amount of damage on the boat and the house at Edisto and some damage here in Walterboro from the 8 or so trees that fell but I'm not complaining because we are fortunate Matthew didn't come through here with 130 mph winds. I have heard from the boat insurance company and they have assigned an adjuster and a surveyor to the claim but they are waiting on me to move to the boat yard which I cannot do yet because they lost a large number of their docks. I met the FEMA adjuster for flood insurance yesterday about the contents under my house and his very fast decision was he might could help with some cleanup but nothing else is covered. I will be meeting with adjusters on Saturday and Sunday about the wind and tree damage on both homes but I am not feeling any love from any of the insurance companies. We'll see how it all goes. Maybe some of you have some advice on dealing with them. Scott 1981 46B Dealer's Choice Edisto Beach, SC

The last time I had a boat insurance claim was 35 years ago and I've never made a flood claim. About 10 years ago we had numerous pieces of property damaged by a hurricane. We had insurance with the same company but they sent different adjustors out for the different pieces of property. One of the adjustors literally counted the number of shingles blown off the roof another saw that the shingles were damaged and gave us a new roof. Another adjustor gave us 1/2 a roof. It made no sense at all. I felt like one adjustor was fair, I felt like one adjustor always sided on the insurance company and I had one who didn't want to pay for anything. The claim with that adjustor took longer because I kept calling back and he would eventually call me back. He did pay more than he wanted but I still had to pay more than I should have had to pay. It took forever to close it out. Maybe you'll have affair adjustor.

Scott, I've had 2 experiences with insurance claims. First was a fire at my summer home the second was water at my main residence. In both cases I used a public adjuster to deal with the insurance company. The fire claim went from $35K to $85K and the second from $18K to $38K all credit goes to the public adjuster. I hope I never have another claim but if I do the first thing I will do is call a public adjuster. Their fee can be negotiated. Thanks Capn' T 33'Bert SF 3116 Cats Hyannis MA.

Scott I'm glad to hear you are OK after the storm.I didn't know the storm was that bad there in the low lands of South Carolina.I do remember from being there that your area is right at the waters edge no protection from any storm. Scott dealing with insurance companies with the boats is easier than dealing with property damage. Here in New Jersey when Sandy rolled in the insurance companies were totaling most of the boats instead of repairing them. Lots of boats were bought back for penny's and repaired. I remember that you had the same insurance company as I did you should have no problem with them.Agreed value is the way to go.I hope Anthony doesn't have to much damage to his marina. Glad your OK and good luck. John J.
