I read the comments with great interest as I am ready to get a tender with an outboard. We currently use an inflatable tender (under 6feet) without an engine bracket mount. We will go for the smallest size tender (with engine bracket mount) and secure it aft on the swim platform while under way. My problem, and the purpose of this post, is to get ideas about securing the engine. With a generator in the aft compartment, I have not found a decent, out-of-the-way, and safe place to store the engine while under way. Your thoughts and experiences will be greatly appreciated. I mounted mine on the ladder and it works out very well there.

Symeon, Actually I have 2. A 13ft Avon witha 35 Merc. We tow that one around locally. But for the islands I have a 11.2 with a 15hp. I deflate the dink and put it in a bag. Wrap the engine in a padded movers blanket and load them behind the ladder on a rubber mat. Kind of out of the way, but I also have about 8 scuba tanks and dive gear all piled in there too. Buit all gets there and I can set it up and get it out of the cockpit. Gene Dugan

Symeon, I store my 5 hp out board between the engines on my s.f. model, easy to acsess thru hatch and out of the way. built a small cradle that holds the shaft end up so prop doesent touch and enginge rests on cowling. Dan

These three ideas sound interesting. However, 1. what do you mean by mounting the engine on the ladder? on its side? do you have any pics? 2. what do you mean behind the ladder? do you mean on the engine box itself? 3. in between the two engines? that is where the batteries are stored in my bertram. also, are you not worried about any gas leaking from the engine and causing ignition with all the heat the engines give out? I am back again to this post as it has given me considerable problems. The actual dingy is brought straight into cockpit while travelling nearby destinations. its long term place is on the transom, vertically. I have also tried the bow but it is far too much hassle (and zero visibility if we want to drive from lower helm). These options have their problems. When in the cockpit, it is hard to move around, especially in an emergency or when socialising guests. When tied vertically to the transom, we hide the name and have been stopped by the coastguard. The only option now seems to deflate the damn thing. Second matter is the engine. We have the fish box in the cockpit (but we do not fish) and we place the engine in there on its side. Unfortunately we have been warned not to lay the engine on its side because the oil will seep into places it is not meant to and destroy it. Is there any truth to this? comments, thoughts, and design layouts still welcome Symeon MOT B33SF'82 Greece
