Update: The boat passed survey last week, went down yesterday and had them put it in the water for a seatrial. The temp outside was about 45 degrees but the sun was real warm, so the ride was great. Nice and toasty up on the bridge with the enclosure. We went out for about 50 minutes and came back and made the final payment on the boat. My repower guy (Bill Landan) was there also, we then took the boat across the harbor to his facility where he will be doing the repower. The facility is top notch, all the equipment and engine shop is right at the boat. Bill subcontracts for the Yacht Yard onsite, he is hands on, one man show with one employee. NO yard monkeys involved! With the good fortune of having Frank B's eyes and ears out in the field, I was able to get a super deal on a pair of Cummins Recon 6BTA 315/330 (Metric/SAE) engines. Frank had his hands on a flyer that he got out of a magazine in North Carolina. It listed all the Cummins reps in the tri-state area, along with pricing for recon cummins engines. The prices were excellent so I contacted DeMann Marine Power, North Carolina, and spoke to them about the 315's. When I asked if he would honor the price on the sheet, he said he could do even better! So, with new ZF220A 1.5 to 1 gears (painted and mounted), all the mounts, isolators, exhaust elbows, gauges and harness, belt guards... he gave me a price of $18,800 per engine. These engines are assembled on the same production line as the new Cummins engines, and must pass a series of over 350 rigorous quality checks and inspections. 2 year/2000 hour warranty, includes Parts, Labor, & Travel. He's shipping up to Conn. next week. Thanks Frank B, I owe you one! Bill 1988 33 FBC Ipswich, Ma. > ~-------

Bill, Since you've got inch and half shafts and 23 inch diameter wheels, is there any chance he can get you a 1.75:1 reduction rather than a 1.5:1? Otherwise you'll be looking at swinging smaller props (21 inch dimater) like me. Glad to hear the sea trial went well. That's a really good deal Bill, especially with a new harness which you probably need anyway going over to D. That's a lot of work, never mind the price of the engines alone. Good luck with it, hope to meet up when you're passing (screaming) by 'Cod in the Spring ! Rick Ticket 85 SF Falmouth, MA

Thanks Rich, the boat got hauled out yesterday. Old engines winterized and ready to be hauled out and put on Ebay. I think I'm going to hang on to the generator. Looked like it just had a bunch of work done to it. Maybe put a small auxiliary tank to run it, we use it very little and can live without it if need be. Now I need to make decisions on block heaters, or pan heaters, oil change system. Bill 1988 33 FBC Ipswich, Ma. > ~-------

My 2 cents. With the large volume of oil the diesels have, the oil change system is really handy. It would be a first priority since its difficult to add later. Block heaters is an interesting subject and I am still struggling with (see my recent post on B31 site) and depends what you are looking to get out of them. I think 500 watt pan heaters may be the way to go and can be installed before the engines go in. There won’t be much room to properly install them after the engine are in place. You can then wire them so you have the option to run the as 500 Watts or 250 Watts each, depending on what your need is. One thing you did not mention which is worth considering is adding a electric fuel pump to the Racor filters setup, to fill and prime after changing the elements. Capt Rich Catch 22 1989 33 FBC

Bill, I'll add 2 more cents. I agree with oil change system, I'm looking to eventually install the Reverso GP-3015, tying in transmissions and generator too. I had found some good pricing on the internet for the Reverso system. At the Norwalk Boat show this fall I had a good conversation with the Yanmar Distributor who highly recommended Block Heaters, especially if you have any water that sits in the engine room bilge(Bertram 33's). His thought was the block heaters would ward off any moisture that promotes corrosions (protect your equity investment). I have them on my wish list now. Regading the generator, check on insurance of diesel vs. gas vessel, and whether maintaining a gas generator tank on board affects your rates. Also, once your engines arrive at the shop, up your insurance coverage immediately to cover yourself for the increased boat value (God forbid anything happens while it's sitting on land - don't need to tell you that!). I am having block heaters installed for exactly the reasons mentioned above. I am also having a reverso oil change system installed (plumbed for mains, gears, and genny). Oh ya, keep those values high! I have read on Boatdiesel all about the pads and block heaters(to the point I think I got a little dizzy!). I also read on a Hatt site about the troubles they had applying the pads with the engines in the boat. They didn't stick and started smoking immediately and nearly caught on fire. It's a one shot deal with the adhesive and if you miss your screwed. The detroits have raised lettering on the bottom of the pan, so you can't get a good application. I'm curious about the block heaters being on all summer. It must be hot as hell inside the whole boat with those things going. I guess you just shut them off? I'm still going to do it, I like the Fleetguard "screw ins" 750 watt(240volt) running on 120 volt. The pads are very inexpensive and easy to apply, especially with the new engines out of the boat, but I like the block heaters. Start ups with a warm engine is supposed to greatly increase the life of the engine. Plus keep things from rusting away, which we all have issues with seeing how there is always some standing water somewhere in our bilges. The oil changers are a must also for me. I can't see pumping all that oil without them. I don't want oil changes to be a chore, especially since they're so important on a diesel engine. I will probably skip hooking them up to the trannys. I'll change that oil with my old 5 gallon bucket with the pump on top of it system. Bill 1988 33 FBC Ipswich, Ma. > ~-------
