Here are some more pics from our trip that I thouhgt I'd share. This is Island Time happily berthed in our slip at the resort, just after we arrived at the island without a problem, re-fueled, and after we got her cleaned up. I was very happy when I took this picture Some pics of the Mahi we caught there, despite unknowlingly fishing in the wrong areas. Next time the cooler will be full because I've got local knowledge now Scott Traenkle, who you will meet if you make it to Martha's this summer, and I at the helm during the crossing. We were the only two who managed to stay awake the whole trip over Scott is so good he can hold a course with his feet to keep his drinking hands free, I am learning from the Master While in the Bahamas I took in the local customs and grew my hair a bit longer Near the end of the Lucayan Waterway, there is a mountain of fill on either side where they stopped building the concrete seawalls. I think they used the piles of sand to batch their own concrete as they moved along the canal, and the big piles they left were where they stopped. Anyway, there was one big mound on either side of the Waterway, and after we saw it the first time, Scott coined the name of the place: "Mount Rachel." Something about those two hills reminded him of her, I don't know what. Well, next time we went there I decided that I needed to climb Mount Rachel and plant the flag. It was a stupid idea because the damned thing was a lot bigger and steeper than it looked, but I managed to do it without killing myself, here is the proof: This was what we called the "Buzzard Hotel," because buzzards were the only things living there. They built this huge thing right on the waterway, and then left it. Story from the locals was that Howard Hughes owned half of the top floor, and was the last human resident to leave it. This is Rachel and I in front of it on the bow Okay now that I bored you to death I'll go back to more productive things... Looks like you had a great time. Looks like it was COLD. That must be Xanadu. You guys stay there? My wife has been bugging me to go to Lucaya for a couple years, but I think that trip is for just messing around. Diving and Fishing , I can't pass up Bimini, West End , or Northern Abacos. With the cost of fuel now, and the threat of Eth eating my tanks and engines, I'm not too sure where to go from here. I'm thinking about restoring a old 26 FB and adding outboards. Gene Dugan

Gee Gene, isn't that a little dramatic? But if you want an outboard-powered boat I've got a Pro-Line with your name on it! Lucaya is right near Xanadu. For those that don't know it, Xanadu is a map point offshore of Lucaya area, and from Stuart, West Palm or Lauderdale areas it is a good waypoint to aim for, if that's where you are going. I don't know why they call the waypoint Xanadu- anybody know the story? I assumed it was because you just made it across the scary part of the Gulf Stream. It was cold by my standards for a couple of days while we were there, like 60's at night and mid-70's and cloudy during the day. Some of those pics you saw were during the cold spell. Our buddies from Mass didn't think it was cold. We stayed at the Ocean Reef Yacht Club, about 3 miles west of Port Lucaya proper. We fished all the way from Borco to West End and back, and caught fish but didn't come close to filling the cooler. We also drove (the car) out to West End one day, and that place is way too expensive for me. I don't know what fuel was there but I bet it was inflated also. In Lucaya it was $3.20 a gallon, not great but much better than the stories you hear about paying $5-6 a gallon. Towards the end of the trip we met a guy who worked on charter boats, and he said the best place on Grand Bahama to fish is just offshore the opposite (north) end of the Lucayan waterway. On one of our trips we passed a Bertram 31 heading back the other way through the waterway, presumably from a fishing trip. I wish we had talked with him before we went fishing where we did. Haven't done Bimini or Abacos yet, but in time... About the Lucayan Waterway: the red marker is about 30 feet too far to the east / right. If you get too close to it at low tide you'll hit something. A sailor in the Marina gave us this knowledge before we went, telling us a guy lost both his rudders there. I didn't see why until the day before we left when we went there and it was low tide and very clear. There is a line of coral parallel to the channel but within the marked area. If you go, stay far away from the red marker! Sean Burlingham "Island Time" 1987 Bertram 33 SF Melbourne, FL SBurlingham@cfl.rr.com

Sean, If I were to downsize , it would probably be a old Bertram 26. I saw a couple of the restored FB models with brackets on them. wonder if they may have been tail heavy with OBs. I do know the 25 Moppie with OB conversion is. Just thinking outloud. Gene Dugan

Gene, I had an '83 26' Moppie with twin Crusader 165 h.p. That was a great boat and I sometimes regret selling it. Everyone told me the performance and handling of the 26' vs. 25' Bertram was far better. I just wish it had more power. With outboards the boat would probably fly. Mine was about 7,100 lbs. if my memory is correct. There's an '83 repowered with twin 265 h.p. (I think) up on Cape Cod, but they want a lot of money. Now that boat must move. Well we just went to see that new Pirates movie. Kind of had to after finding their stashed movie-prop boat in the Bahanas. I thought the movie kind of stunk- don't waste your money, wait for that one to hit cable. They didn't have too much of the ghost ship in it either, I wonder why they built such an ornate thing for just a few scenes. Still it was neat to see it on screen, but man- that movie droned on and on and on Sean Burlingham "Island Time" 1987 Bertram 33 SF Melbourne, FL SBurlingham@cfl.rr.com

I heard the same thing - not as good- but set up for plenty more pirate movies - I was thold that there was more "movie franchise" setup than anything.

I saw the movie. It was OK, not great. It would've been better had they cut around 30 minutes or so. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

I saw it last weekend. It was OK. Didn't like the ending. The opening night ,midnite , my daughter and her friends all dressed up as wenches. She works at the theater and swiped a full size Capt Jack Sparrow prop that is in my living room at the moment. Maybe we can get a picture with us all and post it. Gene Dugan
