The thing I don't like about the halogens is that they typically get really hot, and I don't want to add a fire hazard to the boat. One idea I'm entertaining is those flexible light strips that you see people putting around their pool decks. They don't get hot and throw quite a bit of light. Placed in the track along the ceiling I think they would light up the cabin okay, but you wouldn't be able to actually see them. Only trouble with those is they are 110 V so away from shorepower and no genny running, no good light. Sean Burlingham "Island Time" 1987 Bertram 33 SF Melbourne, FL SBurlingham@cfl.rr.com

Sean... I have installed the lights you mention (called by my elect. supplier "rope lights") as hidden ambient lighting in the house I am presently finishing. I first saw them in a strip club somewhere while on a business trip I think. They are probably a little dim to use as the only light source in a salon, but might be useful in a bunk cabin or forepeak. I buy them cut to my required length (they have to be cut in increments of 3 bulbs I believe) and pay by the linear foot. A couple of days ago I saw them in precut lengths in my local Lowes home improvement store, so you can but a small length to test. BTW: I posted a couple of days ago the schedule for the sea trial and surveys for the boat I have an offer pending on.. see my last post on my old "I finally bit the bullet" post. The sea trial is tomorrow (Thurs) afternoon! Frank B - IRGuy@aol.com Somewhere between having made an offer and passing papers

I saw white rope lighting in a 1987 or 1988 33' Bertram with diesels for sale in Jacksonville, FL next to mine 2 years ago. The rope lighting ran length wise front to back in the salon along the ceiling on both sides with a on/off toggle switch. They were used as accent lighting/mood lighting. I did like how they looked. They also used the rope lighting under the cockpit coaming with a on/off toggle switch. They provided nice accent lighting in the cockpit. I got a email from Danny @ High Tide. He wants me to send him a picture of the salon light set-up. Must be several configurations. Probably Bertram trying to use up inventory before they took the 33 out of production. I mentioned the rope lights earlier. They do make them in 12V. I don't think they would produce enough light, even if doubled up inside where the current lights are located. I may be wrong, but it's worth checking it out. Gene Dugan

Hey Doug, I suggest that as soon as Frank has his Bertram that we have a rendezvous in N.C. at Frank's favorite strip club, seeing that we all have never been to one before!
