I stand corrected, I guess the 3126's will fit. I was thinking of the next larger series. Have you seen those cats in the open? They're huge. I have heard that the Yanmar 370/440's will fit and they look like they would, not that giant on the floor, though the Sportfish I saw with the yanmar 315's looked great, not too big, not too small. If it were me, I'd probably go with the cummins 330's or 370's. The 330's would allow a cruise of around 23-25 knots and I'd still be able to use my 1.5" shafts if I changed them to aquamet 22's. Bill, my bottoms not dirty it has fresh paint it just has 25 years of paint on it. in the next few years after i get over the shock of putting in new engines i want to strip all the paint and fix a few blisters i figure that alone would pick up a knot or 2 Tim Stamm Photo Finish 1981 33' Bertram FBC

Doug, that boat in the link you posted is one sweet ride. Even for the asking price, if they get it, it would still be a good purchase. David Sumich Bertram33.com Forum Administrator

I still think a buck fifty five is a bit too steep. It just feeds into what I've been questioning all along. If you drop $45K-$75K into a 33, does that mean its now worth $XXXK plus $45K-$75K? To a point I think you can recoup some of your investment, but I just don't see anyone spending that kind of money for it. I know I wouldn't. For the owners sake I hope he gets it, but I'll bet that the boat sits for a long time at that price. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

For what it's worth, I hope he gets it. You fiqure if that boat was clean with decent gas engines it would be worth about 80-90k? Then the conversion to cats must have cost him at least 80k. If someone paid his aking price, they'd be getting a bargain. And I know what you're thinking, why would you want a $150,000 33? The answer might be that not everyone wants a bigger boat with all the extra keeping and operating costs. I'm pretty sure I will be staying with this size and possibly this boat for the forseeable future. Frank Price

That is what I was thinking too Frank. If I wanted to stay with 33 (which I do), then why not get a top shelf ride? It is all about value I suppose. You either see it there or not, which of course all depends on what you're looking for. David Sumich Bertram33.com Forum Administrator

I took a look at that Bertie with the 3126's. I'm not so sure it is a 33. I don't remember any of them having a second state room with no engine boxes. Maybe it's a misprint. The 3126's weigh in at 1592 each. I'm about to repower mine from gas to diesel. I like the 3126's, but I've been told the cummins probably fit better. The whole job will cost me about 70k...that's ok for the reliability and safety. (I like to raft up and shoot out to the Bahamas and the Keys) [:I]

Its definately a 33 Fly Bridge Cruiser (aka FBC). The FBC was actually produced before the Sport Fishermen and never had engine boxes. FBC's were made from 1977-1993 and the SF's were made from 1979-1993. The second stateroom in the FBC's was added in 1980. I actually spoke with the guy that did the re-power on that boat and he said he could have made the boat faster with the Cummins 370's than the Cats. Doug, My 82 FBC has a "side cabin" on the starboard side with bunk beds, were there other layouts available ????? or what was the layout for pre-1980's ???? Also, is that person that re-powered with C 370's on this Forum ???? or is there any way I could contact this guy ??? Thanks Ken

I've heard some really bad stories about those CAT 3126 Engines. Bad news and sob stories about them all over boatdiesel.com too. Sean Burlingham "Island Time" 1987 Bertram 33 SF Melbourne, FL

Are you sure you're not talking about the 3116's? At anything over 300hp, I know those things are supposed to be like handling grenades with the pins out. I don't recall seeing that much bad stuff about the 3126's. I like boatdiesel, its got a lot of great info. The issue is that everyone goes there to try and rectify their problems so you hear more bad than good. It seems that no matter which brand you look at (i.e. detroit, cummins, yanmar, cat, volvo,...) everyone has something bad to say. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA
