any idea what a generator burns - I know it depends on load, size - but how about a ballpark guess?

Very very little. I would guess 1/2 gallon per hour. Bill 1988 33 FBC Ipswich, Ma. > ~------- [img]

I think the exact rate on mine was 0.46 gallons at 80% load. With an 8 KW, I can have everything running full blast and still only use 80% of its capacity. I don't normally run the HW heater at all, just the A/C, and most of the other high-demand things are usually not running either (microwave, battery charger) so I'm probably burning much less than .46 on average. I installed a big genny in anticipation of a big icemaker that will shoot ice into a cooler and actually fill it in a few hours, along with a freshwater maker that would feed it, so I'm not carrying around 70 gallons of water all the time. quote:Originally posted by dougl33 I think the most important thing while running it is to make sure that you constantly keep a load on it. Running it with out a load is not good. I think that is the case for all diesels, spinning the mains at the dock is not good enough. They need to move the boat around, as often as possible. I can't even get mine to operating temperature without a load, even at 2000 RPM for 10 minutes. Diesel boats need to move Sean Burlingham "Island Time" 1987 Bertram 33 SF Melbourne, FL

I have never used the hot water on my boat - but the A/C runs a lot. Basically its the A/C during the day, and a few lights and occasional microwave at night. My rat trap of a generator has had work - wobbles around, makes a lot of noise, looks like crap, but it just keeps going so I dont mess with it to much. I had it tuned up (valve adjustment, belts, hoses, fuel pump) a few years ago - then just regular maint and it looks like it wants to die, sounds like it wants to die - but starts right up amd runs all day.
