Repower
Tim Mine is also going slow. I have removed every thing in preparation for painting the engine room but the cold weather (MA) makes it impossible to paint. I have been spending my time doing as much sub assebly work as I can off the boat ie: exhaust hoses and fittings, wiring harness for all new bonding things like that. I am finding that make crimped and shrink fit terminal connections at my kitchen table is a lot easier than in the bilge. As I mentioned I already have the engines and am trying to figure how much disassembly will be required to get themthrough the engine box opening. I will try to post some photos when I can.

Slowly, because of other presures. current status is engineroom awlgriped and all wiring and plumbing going back in this week. Should swing first engine next week. Not sure yet how much dismantling I will have to do. Looks like just the gear has to come off. I will keep all posted. As I posted elsewhere it looks like I have to drop the rudders to remove the shaft. Just one more thing to do.

i am not sure they had to drop the rudders to pull the shafts on my repower...actually on mine they removed the struts since they had to put in the new bearings they reconditioned one strut while it was off....i was glad they went that route because then i knew the struts were reattatched properly and with new sealant...they actually did drop the rudders anyway because i asked them to repack the rudders while they had my boat. Thanks for the input Tim. I figured that either the struts or rudders have to move and the rudders are easier. I can also repack while they are out. One addvatage to removing the struts is I then can pull the shafts without lifting the boat. It sounds like everything is great with your repower. I would love to see some photos when you have a chance to post them.

Port engine went in the hole yesterday. What a project. Right now the engine is in but still needs to move forward to land on mounts. The engine box overhang restricts the forward movement of the crane. Also I had top remove the gear and starter. Gotta work today so on Sat I will buid a frame and lift then the rest of the way in and remount the gear. Only thing that would have made this easier would have been to take out the entire rear bulkhead which would have meant counters cabinet etc. You always learn on the first one so next week when the starboard goes in it will be easier. Photos soon.

Port engine is in it's final location and securely bolted to the mounts. Measured for the shafts and ordered today. Should see them mid next week. Have to lift the boat to install but will cross that bridge later. Right now it electrical, plumbing and exhaust. Lots of work but I see the end. Starboard side should swing Sat AM.

I went with Merc 8.1 w/ zf/hurth 630a (8 down angle). Ratio is 2.5 to 1 and shafts are 1.5" auquamet 22. Old shafts were 85.5" and new are 89.5". Props are 23 x 26 3 blade. I am going to put old props on for sea trial and make adjustments from there. It sounds like your 4 blades worked out great so I will compare my numbers with yours. I took phots today and will try to post them on Tues.

it is interresting that your new shafts are longer i think mine were shorter because i moved the engines back...did you leave the engines where they were originally?i could not do that on my convertible because of the engine room height. also i see your props are 23" diameter from all that i have been told and read the clearance of the prop tips is very important .all the formulations that i ran stated that a 21" prop was the largest that should run on my boat...i am assuming that the sportfish is the same tip clearance but i am not sure...in fact all the prop shops i talked to suggested i went to 20" which is what i did.i am not saying 23" is wrong because i am no expert i am just suggesting that you investigate it......i know your props wont match mine because my gear ratio is 2.0 Tim Stamm Photo Finish 1981 33' Bertram FBC

Bob, here is an email i got in regards to a prop analisys that i thought might help: "Thank you for your interest in Michigan Wheel propellers. The following is the result of the propeller analysis performed based on the data you submitted. As a result of our analysis, our naval architect suggests you consider the following: Diameter and Pitch: 20 x 20 Number of blades: Four Material: Nibral Cup: Medium Style: Dyna-Quad or DQX * Suggested retail price: Approx. $1,127.00 each; approx. $1,083.00 each for DQX * Plus applicable tax and shipping COMMENTS: The suggested propeller size is based on the information you provided and the reported current performance and propeller size. If the current propellers are not cupped, reduce the suggested pitch by one inch. Four blade propellers generally offer improved cruise performance compared to three blade propellers. Three blade propellers generally offer improved top speed compared to four blade propellers. The DQX has more blade area than the Dyna-Quad, which may be beneficial with the 385 HP engines. The recommended clearance between propeller tip and hull bottom is 15% of the propeller diameter. We hope this information is useful to you. For more information on how to purchase our propellers, please check our website for the Michigan Wheel dealer nearest you. Again, thank you for your interest in Michigan Wheel propellers. Should you have any questions or concerns about your analysis, or require assistance in locating the suggested propeller(s), please contact our Inboard Customer Service Department at 1-800-369-4335 between 8 am and 5 pm Eastern time. Sincerely, Greg Verseput MWC Inboard Customer Service " Tim Stamm Photo Finish 1981 33' Bertram FBC
