Post by nick »

I am the owner of a 79 sportfish and would like to get in touch with someone who has repowered with Yanmars. Thanks, Nick.

Nick, Welcome aboard. How long have you owned your boat? There are a number of guys on the site who are running Yanmars. I would use the search function located in the upper right hand corner to get more info. Doug, thanks for the reply; I have owned it three years but have known it well since it first came to the island with gas engines bacck in 1988. It was repowered with 3208,s back in 1991.I am a general practitioner on the island and also have small marine salvage business. The engines are running well but i am tempted to upgrade to get a bit more speed; still just thinking about it. Thanks for the info. Nick.

Unsure but i suspect they are 260s;recently done some work on the boat in general. - new fiberglass watertank, 66 gallons. -new bulkhead between cockpit and salon. -closed in the transom; previous owner had a door put in it. -rebuilt and strengthened some bulkheads in the front compartment. Planning to take out the front and forward side windows/frames and close it in with marine ply and glass it. Ive got structually sound now and its looking reasonable.Cruises comfortably at 18- 19 knots.Thinking about either Yanmars or Cummings c series. When i figure out how to get some photos on the site i do so. Nick.

Nick, I recently repowered with Yanmar 370's. You can read about it on the thread "Brian's Repower" or shoot me an email if you'd like. A couple of others repowered with 315's. Brian '90 Bertram 33' FBC Never Say Never Guilford, CT (Homeport) Kinnelon, NJ (Home)

Was there issues with the door in the transom? I have thought about a transom door. Bill 33 FBC Ipswich, Ma.

Bill, the transom door leftthe transome quite weak and flexible, just didnt like it and would not recommend it. Nick.

Nick... I see that you replaced the aft cabin bulkhead. Mine is delaminating and I suspect there must be rot between the inner and outer skins. I have considered trying to remove the inner skin (I have to completely redo the interior of the main cabin anyway) and then make repairs using plywood to replace the rotted areas and then recover with either Starboard and screws or wood veneered plywood and glue. Why did you replace yours? How did the old one come out? What material did you use for the new one? My surveyor told me this is not an unusual problem for the 33's.. at least in the FBC's with the sliding door. You sound as if you are making a big committment! Good luck! Nick, that would be my concern also, a weakened transom. Aft bulkhead is something I will have to do eventually also. Let us know how that went. Bill 33 FBC Ipswich, Ma.

We replaced the bulkhead with marine ply and covered it with formica, came out quite well; the original had some rot at the base. Nick.
