Brian's Repower - Gas to Diesel - 12/05
Syd, Ask your shipping agent to get a performance agreement in writing with a completion date, with percentages off for every week pass that date, if not, take it else where. We have many really good yards in Florida that do high quality work and I am sure there are others up in the NE. You have a great vessel to be proud of, don't let this repower problem blind you to that fact. I am sure there are many members on the site who will be willing to look into other shops for you if need be. Hang on there! Thanks for your support Ed, Just got off the phone to Eddie had a good long talk, he is taking my boat of the water today and has assured me it will be completed by the end of July, I understand he has had some health problems and also at the yard.I think we have sorted it all out, maybe I was a bit out of line and premature with my condenation and should look at the whole issue not just my point of view. I am feeling a lot better with it now as we have also agreed to talk again on friday after he has inspected the boat. I'll keep it touch Regards Syd

That is great news Syd, May I suggest that at the end of each phone conversation with Eddie that you summarize what is expected and has been agreed, along with a time and date to speak again. I would then follow that up with an email thanking him and recapping what was agreed, and that you are looking forward to speaking with him on such and such date, and that we should meet our projected completion date of xx/xx at this rate. I have found from experience that this method helped me to keep everyone on the same page, reduced assumptions and miscommunications, and enable any errors or misunderstandings to be cleared up immediately before they became a problem. Plus, it kept the deal friendly without it turning bitter. Hope all goes well, and hang in there. Doug, 4 blade Nibral 22 x 26, but he's going to taking a pitch out, down to 25 to see if that does the trick. Syd, I hope things improve for you. I'm picking my boat up on Saturday, so I'll let you know if you're boat made it in the shed. Brian '90 Bertram 33' FBC Never Say Never Guilford, CT (Homeport) Kinnelon, NJ (Home)

Brian, What is your transmission ratio? You could probably get more speed if you used 3 bladed props. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Syd, You are welcome. I am sure you are in good hands, but nothing in boating goes as planned all the time, nor does it cost less than expected. I have learned over my 34 years of owning boats (and airplanes) that all we can do is be like the water our boats float in and "flow with it"! Doug, I picked the boat up on Saturday, July 15, just in time to start our week vacation on Cape Cod. Transmissions are 2 to 1, but he's wondering whether he should have gone 2.5 to 1. He repitched the 4 blade nibrals to 22 x 25 (from 22 x 26)and it made getting out of the hole a little easier. Might have lost a knot on WOT, but the boat runs great. I wonder a little about 3 blades vs. 4 blades, but this prop stuff is half science and half art. Eddie recommended varying the rpms every 15 - 20 minutes through break-in. We cruised Saturday afternoon from Cranston RI to Falmouth Harbor. We cruised consistently around 23 knots, then 25.5 knots, then 28 knots alternating rpms regularly. The boat ran great and the family really enjoyed the trip. We left Falmouth on Saturday afternoon (7/22) around 1:30 p.m. debating whether we would make the full run to Guilford CT or split it up based on sea conditions following the tropical storm that had passed through. Going around Nobska Light we were taking spray up on the bridge enclosure, but things settled down for a little while through Woods Hole and down towards Cuttyhunk. Things then got interesting with 6 - 8 footers, only making 15 - 18 knots and taking occasional spray. This is when you're glad you're in a Bertram. We decided to only go as far as Newport to give us and the kids a break. We headed out at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday and ran into 6 - 8 footers until rounding Point Judith (weather radio was calling them 7 - 10 footers?), but the sun was shining and we were finally heading home. Just before Point Judith we were buzzed by a Helicopter (BoatPix.com - They take aerial photos of boats underway and then you can go online to have them send them to you to see if you want to buy them?) I'm curious as to what we looked like heading straight into the waves at 15 - 18 knots? The further west we traveled the better the conditions got and the better the speed we were able to make. By the time we reached Fishers Island we were back to cruising the 23 - 28 knot range again. It was nice to be passing boats instead of them passing us for a change. The boat is now safe and sound in Guilford! I'll have to compile all the pictures I've taken along the way and get them to Dave to post a slide show. I had the good fortune to be in Falmouth when Brian was there and can tell all of you the engine room is a thing of beauty. All of this anguish and money was worth it when you can see your reflection in the white painted bilges. Amazing amount of room looking over the six cyliners compared to my V8 CATS. Brian, I appreciate your taking the time to give me such a detailed tour of the boat when the family was waiting. It is obvious you are very proud of the outocme, and rightly so. Congratulations Brian, happy cruising. Ron

I knew a guy who use to have a 63' Bertram and while down here on "business" BoatPix took a picture I was told and mailed it to his office and they forwarded it to his home, where his wife opened it. It was a great photo of the boat, the captain, the owner and his "girlfriend". He sold the boat during the divorce. 1979 Bertram 33' FBC ALEXANDRA Port Richey, Florida HAVE YOU SIGNED UP FOR BERTRAM PRIDE '06 yet?
