NITES OFF, ethanol & channel 5 news

Post by lobsta1 »

My squawking may have paid off. Kelley Tuthill, an investigative reporter for channel 5 news in Boston contacted me today. We had about a 15 minute talk & she thinks we have a newsworthy problem. Upshot is she is interviewing me at 1300 tomorrow on the NITES OFF. If we don't end up on the cutting room floor & Gorky Bushie doesn't invade another country we might get some publicity. If my experience with TV news crews holds true, the story might go something like this: "Local man runs his seaplane off of home-brewed fuel made from corn! Story at 11:00!" Try to keep it simple for them, they aren't as good with facts as they are with hairspray Sean Burlingham "Island Time" 1987 Bertram 33 SF Melbourne, FL SBurlingham@cfl.rr.com

Dealing with the media on a regular bases, I have learned that they have certain guidelines that are set by media focus groups that must be in the story to get it aired or printed. One local TV station has reporters that cover each county in the area, however for a story to be aired it must have "appeal" to the other counties (or market segment) to be aired. They are just like any other poorly run business with talking heads. It is like this one station called Bay News 9, we call it "Babe News 9" because the focus group told them that they need to have all beautiful women as anchors. You've gotta love those guys, people actually pay them to tell them this stuff! Have some facts sheets (and where you found the source information you shared with them), along with a prepared statement of information to help establish the angle of the story. Without it, you could be watching it, wondering if they ever heard a word you said. All that hair spray builds up in their ears you know. I would have the names and phones numbers of State Rep's, Congressmen, Boat US and others, ask for action by people calling them. You will need to point out how it will hurt the general motoring public if you want to get great coverage. Remember, they market to the masses, not to a few boat owners. That is until you blow up from the leaking tank... Film at 11... We will explore this explosive subject... right after our own Barbie Blabs shows you how to wash your dog with less soap, keeping our water and fido clean at the same time... back to you Bonzo. Al, tell them you want to go National. Miami Channel 7 News. After all, the old Bertrams were built in Miami, by mostly a Cuban workforce. They knew how to build 'em! Channel 7 loves drama. They would probably blow one up for effect! Gene Dugan

Spent about an hour with Kelley & the camerman today. She did make a point of asking several times how this will also affect the motoring public, lawn mowers & outboard motors. Channel 5's Washington affiliate had Bob Ariadyne from Boat Us drive in to there studio for an interview this morning. They were pleased with that & Kelley told me that Bob recommended that all boaters have towing insurance. We are all going to need it this summer. I also mentioned how Va. had said that for the changeover gas stations would have to change their filters daily. Her response was "No way is that going to happen"! I commented that this long interview would be cut down to one 30 second sound bite. Kelley said they were investing to much in this story to cut it down that much. She will let me know when it is going to air. Another week or two. Al 1978 33 FBC NITES OFF

Al, You hot sh&t ! Great job getting their attention and doing the interview. The stories they are airing today about gas prices are the same old thing......nothing like boats blowing up to liven up a story ! Rick Ticket 85 SF Falmouth, MA

I emailed Manchester Marine about their gas, here is there response, Hi, Bill. Thank you for your inquiry. We curreently expect our first delivery of Ethanol gas will be received here in about three to four weeks. We will work our tank down to the lowest possible level (about 200 gallons out of a total 3,000-gallon capacity) before requesting a delivery. We don't plan to pump our tanks dry before making the changeover. Some mixing of the two fuels (either in our tank or in yours) seems inevitable anyway, if not in our boats then in our cars. One of the biggest concerns with Ethanol as I understand it is the presence of water in the gas. Our tank monitoring system is capable of determining the presence of water in our underground tank and measuring its volume. To date, our readings have been negligible-to-non-existent. Our fuel system maintenance company has recommended different fuel pump filters from what we've used in the past, so we're asking them to switch filters at the time we make the transition. We're posting a notice on our web site in the next day or so, recommending that boaters carry spare water separator filters on board. This is one of a number of practices that is recommended by the EPA for optimal boat performance with Ethanol. Their web site (www.epa.gov) has a very informative reference article on this subject if you're interested. Let us know if we can be of further assistance. So this is at a fuel dock, correct? Is Ethanol going to be present in all gas at a regular station also? Will super unleaded (91 octane) have Ethanol in it also? Just curious if busting out the Gas Caddy and going down to the station numerous times would gain me anything.

David, I don't know what the word about California is, the lasat I've heard, you guys won't get ethanol for some smog realted reason. As this stuff changes almost daily, you will need to keep up on it . Right now , out here, the marinas are pimping(did I say pimping? I meant pumping) the same stuff as regular gas stations.
