Some good info from Chevron. The potential for phase separation requires that gasoline oxygenated with ethanol not be exposed to water during its distribution or use in a vehicle. Because of this requirement, gasoline oxygenated with ethanol is not transported in pipelines, which sometimes contain water. Rather, the ethanol is added to tanker trucks at the terminal immediately before delivery to the service station. Housekeeping at the service station is very important to prevent water contamination. This water sensitivity also means that extra care should be taken when gasoline oxygenated with ethanol is used as a fuel for boat engines. Ethanol blends are hygroscopic (absorb moister from the air) and in time can phase separate during storage if the tank is vented to the atmosphere and is subject to breathing as a result of temperature changes. I guess it is very important to only fill your tank with the amount of fuel you are going to be using. Bill 33 FBC Ipswich, Ma.

In other words , we can just assume the fuel will be contaminated with water. Hopefully the Bahamian's won't start using this fuel anytime soon. There marinas are getting better, but I still get water once in awhile over there. I call a fuel truck at home, and never have any problem with water here. Have to be careful in the Keys too. i conducted a little experiment of my own. in november i took 2 glasses, filled 1 with gas/ethanol and put a strip of the fuel tank in it. filled the other with gas/ethanol, forced phase separation, and put a strip of fuel tank in it. the 2 glasses were left in my unheated garage with saran wrap laying over them to keep dust out. here is what has happened. 1- the straight fuel has discolored what was the inside of the tank strip with a white haze and the fuel has turned brownish/red which is the color of the resin. 2- the phase separated gas portion has almost entirely evaporated leaving water and an oily layer under the what is left of the fuel. also, after phase separation occurs mixing will NOT undo it. i am not a chemist, i only made it thru bio101 in college (a long time ago) so take this for what it's worth. jim

Just got gas for the car, ethanol stickers were on the pump. Heard the fuel docks were giving away the gas so they could be somewhat empty when they fill up with ethanol. My first fill up on the boat will be somethime in late June. Bill 33 FBC Ipswich, Ma.
