Pirates of the Caribbean

Post by Sean B »

We're back from Grand Bahama, arrived last night. We had great crossing weather home, finally, after waiting four extra days for the winds to die down. Worse things have hapened to me than being stuck in the Bahamas. One of the highlights of our trip was the Ghost Ship from the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I guess in the new movie, this ship gets in a big fight with the Black Pearl. It was tucked away in a side channel of the Lucayan Waterway, where they were filming. After we heard about it we spent all day looking, along the entire Waterway, and were still quite lucky to see it. Was really quite well hidden. I guess filming is over, and the boat is going to be moved somewhere else soon. Anyway, the last day there, I hired a professional photographer (in the Bahamas that means a lady with a camera but the pics are okay anyway) and then dropped her off on the seawall opposite the Ghost Ship to get these pics. Here they are: Sean Burlingham "Island Time" 1987 Bertram 33 SF Melbourne, FL SBurlingham@cfl.rr.com

Okay I'll try to answer all questions but sorry if I missed any. The swim ladder was down on purpose so you could see the name of the boat clearly for the pics. I don't really like the ladder the way it is, but it's what I have until I change it. I think it probably would rip right off the the swim platform if I left it down while cruising. But I haven't made that mistake (yet). We burned 150 gallons from Stuart to Lucaya. That was a lot more than I expected and I was surprised that I was off (by about 30 gallons). I also know why now- we had 6 people and 1000 pounds of their luggage on board, and were pounding through 5-6 foot head seas most of the way, and against the Gulf Stream. The whole trip, dock to dock, was about 6 hours. Same trip home back to Stuart, with just Rachel and I and none of the other's stuff on board (they left via ferry because they couldn't wait for the weather to turn), we burned only 100 gallons of fuel. But we were also traveling with the Stream, and in (max) 2 foot following rollers and with following winds. And also remember we were light 1000 lbs. of luggage (I'm not kidding about that number) and also light 600 lbs. of people, compared to the trip there. That trip was about 4.5 hours, but I was also pushing the engines a bit, cruising at 2550 RPM, because we were doing the whole trip to Melbourne all in one day this time and I wanted it over with. Boy do I need to install my autopilot. Holding a course with a Kalik (Bohemian beer) hangover for a 10 hour boat ride really sucks. I fueled up at Stuart but did not check in with Immigration and Customs there. I didn't want to get sent an hour south to West Palm Airport to show passports, as I'm told is the drill there, which would have killed my goal of getting home in one day. I don't know if I broke the law or not, but I never actually stepped off the boat and into USA while fueling in Stuart. So I say I didn't break any laws. For lack of repercussions, I seem to be correct this time. I grew a brain just before approaching the St. Lucie Inlet and took down my Bahamas flag (never did fly quarantine on my way back in). And that was a good thing because there was a USCG Cutter sitting just outside the inlet, seemingly looking for those with liberal interpretations of the rules. They changed their heading as we exited the inlet after fueling, and then actually followed us for a mile north. Made me really nervous for a bit, but then they suddenly turned back south towards the inlet. Guess they had bigger fish to fry. Or perhaps the whole crisis was a product of my imagination, we'll never know... The trip from Stuart to Melbourne was equally uneventful, as was the goal. As for fuel I don't know yet because I didn't fill up yet and I don't have a working fuel gauge (how scary is that?). But I generally know what we burn and can guess it within 5 gallons at the fuel dock, except for the trip to Lucaya when I was off by 30 gallons and will certainly remember that. I'm betting that we burnt 95 gallons from Stuart to Melboure. Will see how right I am soon, anybody want to wager? We checked in by phone in Melbourne with Customs and Immigration. As is the drill here, we had to drive to the airport the next day (one day and all the difference in the world) to show our passports to a lady that seemed as annoyed by the process as we were, she was extremely cool. So dock to dock, we left Lucaya at 9am and arrived in our slip in Melbourne at 7 pm. And Yes, upon arrival I gave the boat a big kiss on the gunnel for her flawless performance. Will write more later, especially about the time we went out in 10 foot seas while we there. Sean Burlingham "Island Time" 1987 Bertram 33 SF Melbourne, FL SBurlingham@cfl.rr.com

Sounds like it was a great trip. Where did you sleep the 6 people? I know the FBC can sleep 6 somewhat comfortably, but its tight. Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

The only time that happened was for one night in Stuart, where they were out of hotel rooms. Scott and his wife got the v-berth, his buddy and girfriend got the pullout. Rachel and I got the bridge. Yes that is too tight, don't even like 4 people but one night didn't kill us. The rest of the time all 4 yankees stayed in rooms at the resort, Rachel and I stayed on our floating home.
