Flybridge floor delamination

Post by jcooper »

I am looking at a 1986 Covertible and the surveyor said that the flybridge floor crackled quite a bit when he walked on it. Is this normal or is it an indication of of a delamination problem. If it is a delamination problem, is it a normal thing in these boats and it is easy to fix?

My '87 sportfish does not do this and I would be pretty stressed out if it did.Maybe others will have more experience with this but I don't think it's too common. Frank Price

Not a common problem that I've heard of, most bridges are covered with either an enclosure or hardtop. If the boat has spent it's life without cover from either of these, then it is much more possible to have this problem on the deck. Bill Dunlop "Rebecca Rose" 1988 FBC Ipswich, Massachusetts

I've got an 86 convertable and do not have that issue. Are you positive it was the flybridge deck he was talking about and not the cockpit? Regards, Doug L. 1986 33 Bertram FBC Queen Elizabeth Marblehead, MA

Yes the surveyor said it was the flybridge decking. I know the headliner was replaced in the main cabin recently....maybe the bridge decking had a leak and stained the headliner and started the delamination.

Is the bridge deck a solid layer of fiberglass or is it cored?

My flybridge floor is completely solid. I too would be stressed out if I had this problem. I would say no, these boats do not have this as a common problem and no, this would not be an easy fix. David Sumich 1986 SF - 33 Megabites Huntington Harbour, CA Forum Administrator

This is the first time I've heard of an issue with it. Try calling Danny at Hightide Marine in Miami. They're cored, with wood inside. I know that from re-piping the A/C ducts recently. Don't know exactly what it is but it reminded me of balsa. Make sure you keep all holes sealed in the bridge deck because it would be an awful thing to try to fix. I say if there's any hint of a problem with the coring rotting out on the bridge, walk away from the boat. Sean Burlingham "Island Time" 1987 Bertram 33 SF Melbourne, FL SBurlingham@cfl.rr.com

I agree, I never saw a weak flybridge floor on these boats. I think I would walk on this one. Something is obviously caused some sufficient damage under there. Gene Dugan

I agree with everyone above, I would walk away also, as that is going to be a large and costly job. 1979 Bertram 33' FBC ALEXANDRA Port Richey, Florida

Yes it's on Yachtworld...listed in San Diego. I would tend to agree on the walking away......but I have looked at others and most if not all of them are located on the east coast. The shipping is a big number and I wonder if I take this one planning to fix the problem would I be better off? I am stuck on these damn boats and willing to buy a 33, 35, or 38.

John, You are stuck on a great make of boat, especially for your waters, there is no better vessel. Yes, more Bertrams are on the east coast, (as Trollycrafts and Californians are on the west coast), because of where they were built. But you would be mush happier in the long run to find a clean Bertram on the east coast, negotiate a good price and pay the shipping to WA. As a good boat that has been maintained will be less problems in the long run, then one that has not been taken care of. It's the old adage "either pay me now or payer me later". Besides, it a whole lot warmer in FL then in WA this time of year, what could be a better reason to come here and look. [8D] Here is another link to look at:http://www.bertram-boats-for-sale.com/ Best of luck in your quest. 1979 Bertram 33' FBC ALEXANDRA Port Richey, Florida
