I think that you will find that with any diesels in our boats that get the hull moving at 20 knots or more, you will get 0.8 - 0.9 gallons per mile at whatever cruise or WOT speed. As for your cruise speed with 370 HP, I can't say for sure, but I can say for sure that I'm going to be jealous. I would guess 24 knots cruise and 27-28 WOT. From what I've read, that much power with those engines should give you a cruise of about 26 -27 knots with a fuel burn of around 26 - 28 GPH. That is the setup I would like to have. Frank Price

Mike, I was up to the Newport Boat Show talking with engine manufacturers too. Are you in Morristown, NJ? I live in Kinnelon, work in Morris Plains, but do my boating out of Westbrook, CT. I might head to the Norwalk Show this coming weekend too to continue investigation. I'm debating a gas vs diesel repower. I was very impressed with Eddie Johnson of Johnson's Boat Works in Cranston, RI. He's a repower specialist, deals Cummins and Yanmars, but is the largest Yanmar dealer in New England. I think he said he does 30 - 40 repowers a year. He's a very knowledgeable guy and has done a 33' Bertram repower. Yanmar 315's run $23K each, 370's about $28K each. Mack Boring (Yanmar Distributor) also put me in touch with Brewer's Ferry Point Boatyard in Old Saybrook, CT. They did a repower on a 1977 33' FBC putting in a couple of 370 yanmars a couple of years ago. The owner let the manager and I go aboard this past Saturday and take a look. Nice installation! The yard manager says it'll cruise at 25 - 27 knots or so. I've asked him to have the owner contact me so I can ask some more questions. I also spoke with Cummins Distributor in Rocky Hill CT, but dealerships seem to be sparce along the CT shoreline. We talked about recon 330's and 370's versus QSB 380's. I've also put in call to Al Grover's repower center on Long Island to get his thoughts & opinions. Their website has some good comparitative repowers ... 33' Egg and 35' Egg among others. Take a look at their website regarding engine sizes, speeds and economy ...he's another Yanmar specialist. I also put in a call to Precision Marine who is another Repower Specialist in New Rochelle, NY, I will let you know what I find out there. What year is your boat? SF or FBC? I am the owner of 79 Sportfish with 3208s, and would like to get in touch with anyone who has repowered with Yanmars. Thanks, Nick.

Mike, I've done the same dance with my B35 and I think for the B33/35 the cummins 370 is a nice package. The only thing I've come across lately is that at 370hp, 1-3/4" shafts are recommended. For my going from 1-3/8" shafts it would mean new struts and more shaft log work. Also more $$ for the motors. The 330, seems to fit a more cost sensistive repower, but the 370 would give better performance. Though it would be intersting to compare performance differences vs.cost differences between the 330 & 370. Over on Bertram31.com, Bruce just had a post about the Yanmar dealers meeting and it sounds like the 315/370 are going to be well supported. I still thing cummins gives you more for the dollar.

John, I repowered last spring with cummins 370b's.I had 1 3/8" shafts that dripped so I went to 1 3/4" driples and had new struts installed. It cost a few more dollars which I think was worth it because this will probably be the last boat I own.I'm not getting the numbers as those who repowered with yanmars.Fully loaded,tackle,2 162qt coolers loaded with ice,6 people, 2 coolers loaded with food and drink for the 6 and 400 gallons of fuel I would run 22 knots just over 2400rpm.At 3000 rpm which is wide open I would run at 26 knots. On a recent trip to the canyon which was 80 miles out and 80 miles back plus 9 hours of trolling we burned 219 gallons of fuel which I thought was very good.So far I am very happy with the installation and the performance of the boat.

Michael, Your numbers sound pretty good, especially when diesel is a $1 or more a gallon cheaper. I think your only a few kts off what the Yanmar's were posting and that may be accountable in gear weight and prop differences. Would you happen to know the cost (ballpark) of new struts? It wouldn't hurt my feelings to replace the 33 year old struts, just my pocket book. As the time gets closer, I'll certainly price out both the 330's and 370's since there isn't much of any physical difference. Just the differences in cost of the motors, new vs. old struts, and shaft sizes. Right now I'm putting together some cost estimates with me doing a lot of the grunt work. Removing the old engines, cleaing and painting the engine room and so on. My yard has said they wouldn't mind if I did some of the work and offered to do whenever I couldn't. I think I can get the cost to convert under $10k by doing most of it myself. I have another question, how is the sound at cruise vs. the sound with gas engines? Thanks, John

One yard gave me a price on the engines and gears and then told me if I like the price and I decide to use us we will then come and look at my boat and tell me what else I need.My boat was 15% over the original quote.I thought it would be around 10% so I was a little surprised. One thing is that the yards charge you for every extra screw, nut, bolt, etc, etc, etc. My final list of materials used was 10 pages long but they did quality work and are very responsive if I have a problem.

Having put nearly 120 hours on the new 315 Yanny's I am pretty impressed. Fuel burn is better than expected, zero black smoke, and my only concern regarding handling weight when loading her up for canyon runs has not been an issue. I've done a few over-nighters, 90 out 90 back, troll a bunch, run the gen and used about 230 gallons. This with the boat loaded to the max and running her about 20 - 23 knots depending on wind and current. I am so impressed at how little impact weight actually has on diesel power vs gas. The load I took last weekend would have made my gassers struggle to get on plane. These things pop her right out of the water - I literally start laughing every time. Now having the benfit of experience, it is a nice power plant for this boat. I obvioulsy use the crap out of it and I still say there are about 3 times in a season that running faster than 23 is actaully realistic. I know you guys disagree but I am out there a lot
