Insurance woes

Post by sla168 »

Anyone have any trouble insuring your Bertie? I just bought an 88 sportfisherman. So far Boat US is willing to do me right for a HIGH price! Others will insure but for a fraction of the value. Any thoughts?

Sla 168, About the best I could get was $1100.00 a year from a local marine insurance agent. I checked around quite a bit (this was last sept.) and all the quotes were pretty similar but I recall Boat US was higher.Plus, I bought my boat a week before a hurricane was due in the north east and nobody would touch it until AFTER the hurricane passed. One more thing, you won`t get a decent quote until you have a survey, in case you don`t already. I'm on the West Coast, so I'm not sure how relevent this is, but I got my insurance also from a local outfit at ~$1050/year. I think I could get it even lower when I present my certifcates for my Power Squadron and Coast Guard classes. David Sumich Bertram33.com Forum Administrator

I am paying about $1800 and change on my 33 FBC. Being in Fl jumps it up, plus I have Bahama coverage . That is Boat US. i found cheaper, but if I resurvey the boat it more than makes up the difference in price...so why bother. post any good deals you may find. E.W. Dugan

I have /had National Marine Underwriters Insurance . I just got a notice that they will be dropping all coverage in Florida due to hurricanes. This really stinks .So now I have to find new coverage during hurricane season at what will probably be double the cost of my current policy. This is really annoying that you have to pay out the wazoooooo for insurance and then when thay have to pay out they just drop everyone and pull out for a few years so they or someone else can charge you double. This has happened quite a few times with home insurance as well.I could understand if this was happening with small fly by night companies but it is not .National Marine Underwriters is probably the second largest boat insurer. Anyone got names of agents to call please let me know

I have boat US and mine is about 2400 year, but being in Texas the rates are higher because of the hurricanes, I looked around and could not find any better deal, some companies were even higher

boat useless quoted 3k around double the cost of old policy and that is value at only 60k another company was 2k . It just aint right, we feed these insurance companies for 100 years and they have to pay claims and they drop policies so they can double them...,i am not happy!!!!

Tim, No doubt the prices are reflecting the fact that the insurance companies have benn taking it on the chin in Florida for the last couple of years. I am sure that after a few years of no hurricanes the rates will come down? Right? My policy and I'm sure many others , specifically states that my boat will not be covered in Florida. It would be easier to take a hurricane down there if you guys actually had some place to take the boat out of harms way when one hits. I suppose if we get a hurricane up here this year it will give the ins. companies a reason to raise our rates also...So it goes..

Hi Gang, My insurance is with Markel American Ins. Co. My insurance went up about 30% this year to $2913 and the windstorm deductable went from 4% to 5%. They have been very reasonable over the 13+ years, but I did have a claim (that I won't go into) and they were very supportive. This covers me at $160K with Bahamas coverage and dingy w/motor included. This little ol hobby of our is getting more and more expensive! Why do I still love it so?

Chris, is that normal for an 84 boat to be covered for 160. Heck I am only covered for 95. Should I up the coverage? Am I screwing myself with being so low? What are the rest of you covering? Mike
